Moeykens moves on from Cornwall school

CORNWALL — Jennifer Moeykens has seen two generations of several families pass through Cornwall’s elementary school during her 34 years there as a teacher.

She jokes that the reason she’s retiring this month is because she doesn’t want to score enough longevity points to see the third generation roll in. Joking aside, she’ll be leaving the school with fond memories and vows to remain active during the next phase of her life outside the classroom.

What’s a 64-year-old Jewish woman from New York City supposed to do with herself after her second husband dies leaving her stranded in Florida among an uninspiring collection of fellow retired New York Jews? In Deborah Lee Luskin’s new novel “Into the Wilderness,” the answer is: move to Vermont.

Clippings: Buds turn to blossoms in the spring

Posted on May 6, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

What a difference a week can make. Two weekends ago I wore short pants while outside doing yard work. A few days later it started snowing, and it continued to snow on and off overnight until we had three or four inches of the white stuff at our house in Middlebury. Last weekend I broke out the shorts again as the temperatures climbed into the high 70s and 80s.

ADDISON/AFGHANISTAN — Sgt. 1st Class Michael Wojciechowski left behind his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children in Addison last Jan. 8 when he joined his Vermont Army National Guard colleagues in the first stages of their deployment to Afghanistan.

Officials in the U.S. armed forces last week shared photos of Wojciechowski on duty in Afghanistan, and Elizabeth Wojciechowski reports that her husband has settled into his mission there.

“He’s doing great,” she said. “The family is doing good.”

Clippings: Daddy learns to roll with the changes

Posted on March 18, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

I don’t know if it is because I have reached a certain age and look back over a longer sweep of time, or because my children have reached a certain age and I see things differently through their eyes, but I’ve really begun to notice how much things change. I’m only 45 years old, but more and more when I tell my 6- and 8-year-olds about scenes from my childhood I find myself having to explain how things were back then.

ADDISON — An estimated 1,700 vehicles used the new ferry across Lake Champlain during its 24 hours of operation on Monday, a volume that prompted New York and Vermont transportation officials on Tuesday to request that a second ferry boat be put into service.

The second ferry, due this month, is to accommodate extra traffic during peak morning and afternoon commuting hours, according to Jon Zicconi, director of planning, outreach and community affairs for the Vermont Department of Transportation.

Clippings: Cookbooks offer more than recipes

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

Our 8-year-old daughter, Emma, is beginning to show a real interest in cooking. Last weekend she whipped up a stack of chocolate chip pancakes for the family breakfast. They were a little on the sweet side, particularly the last few, dredged from the bottom of the mixing bowl with big clumps of chips.

Family, friends come to grips with tragedy

Posted on January 14, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

SALISBURY — An estimated 700 mourners crowded into St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury Wednesday to remember three generations of the Flynn family who died Saturday after the snowmobiles they were driving broke through the ice on Lake Dunmore. That followed a wake at the American Legion Hall in Middlebury Tuesday night that was so crowded that some initially had to wait to get into the building.

Fr. William Beaudin delivered a message of consolation and hope as many in the community were recalling the circumstance of the tragedy and trying to pull any lessons from the calamity.

Public input sought for design of Champlain Bridge at Jan. 4 meeting (UPDATED)

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By John S. McCright

VERGENNES — Turns out the design for the replacement for the Champlain Bridge actually has yet to be set in stone, so to speak.

The Dec. 15 recommendation by the Lake Champlain Bridge Project’s Public Advisory Committee (PAC) to go with option No. 6 of the six bridge designs presented by officials form the New York and Vermont transportation departments — and the overwhelming concurrence with that choice by the public in an online survey last month — are just recommendations.
