Karl Lindholm: Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee

Muhammad Ali was a dancer.

He danced in the ring, light as a feather, sticking and moving, bobbing and weaving, avoiding blows, floating as if on air, stinging his earth-bound plodding adversaries, mere mortals, beating them up, knocking them down and out, in a world of hurt.

Ironic, isn’t it. Such grace of movement, such beauty of physical expression really, in service to violence and pain. Ali wanted to knock you out: his end, his purpose, was your end.

Our young athletes learn more about sports, themselves, and life from playing pond hockey, pick-up basketball or soccer than they ever could from being on an organized team with refs, coaches, uniforms and whistles.

Clippings by Karl Lindholm: Doctor Baseball sings a bedtime song

Boring. Same thing, year after year.

For nearly 10 years, I have offered the same item for the service auction at our church:

Go to a Lake Monsters Game in Burlington with Doctor Baseball”: four people, everything included — a ride to and from the game, tickets, program, hot dog/beer, pretentious inside-baseball conversation.

The minimum bid is $100. The actual value: “Priceless.”

That’s me, “Doctor Baseball.”

Editor’s note: This is the second of a two-part series. Read part one here.

“It could be a train wreck,” was Oscar’s apprehensive assessment.

We were having a late night impromptu discussion of the future of Cuban baseball in Kit Krieger’s 17th-floor room in the Habana Libre Hotel. We had just returned from watching Industriales of Havana defeat Camaguey, 7-1, at Estadio Latinamericano.

Editor’s note: This is the first of two parts.

I followed Oscar.

He gestured subtly and said, “Come with me.”

We had just been entertained by Victor Mesa, the manager of the Matanzas Cocodrilos, in the clubhouse just a half-hour before his game against Ciego de Avila.

Sports column by Karl Lindholm: Red Sox season ends; wait'll next year!

Sunday, October 4, last day of baseball’s regular season:

“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.” — A. Bartlett Giamatti

Karl Lindholm: Don & Jerry, Curt Gowdy, 'Balee Baloo,' and my Mom

My mother almost ruined me for sports.

When I was just a kid, eight or ten or so, I was listening to a Red Sox game on the radio at home, and the Red Sox unloaded on an opposing pitcher, scoring a bunch of runs, and driving the poor guy from the game.

I exulted, casting aspersions no doubt on the other team and its woeful pitcher: “Hit the showers, you bum!” I said, or some other such churlish comment.

Karl Lindholm: It was old – and then it was new

Lindholms at game.jpg

I had forgotten just how much fun it is to go to a professional baseball game in Burlington. I used to go all the time, but age, obligation, and habit combined to change my summer routines. I became less keen to drive up Route 7 to Centennial Field (and back!) night after night.

The first few years the Expos were here (they arrived in 1994), we had season tickets and came to as many games as we could, giving away our tickets to Middlebury friends when we were otherwise obliged.

Karl Lindholm: Ubiquitous announcer-man: Dave Sears

Editor’s note: Local sports figure Dave Sears died on Saturday at the age of 56 (see obituary on Page 6A). In February 2007, sports columnist Karl Lindholm offered this perspective on Dave’s generous, gregarious nature, and his powerful engagement in the community.

Every time I turn around I bump into Dave Sears. The man is everywhere. I think there must be three or four of him.
