Elgin, Artis, Bill, Doctor J: Hoop royalty

Posted on September 1, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

“Don’t look now, Pete. Dr. J.”

Sure enough, there he was, Julius Erving, not 10 feet from us, chatting amiably with friends, dignified, impeccable, with his closely shorn grey hair now turning white, no evidence of the flamboyant trademark Afro of his playing days.

This was a big deal. Dr. J!

Grass skirts, 'Grins & Lies,' baseball clowns

Posted on August 4, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Imagine: black men, barefoot, wearing grass skirts, shirtless, with war-painted faces, uttering gibberish, affecting a crude stereotype of African tribesmen, straight out of Tarzan movies. These were the Zulu Cannibal Giants, African-American baseball players in the 1930s, making a living, clowning, barnstorming the country, delighting white patrons.

Later, this team evolved into the Ethiopian Clowns, and finally the Indianapolis Clowns. The Clowns were a powerful force in black baseball from 1935 to the mid-1950s.

L-screens, old jocks, denial

Posted on July 7, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

I love the L-screen.

It makes me feel years younger. I am always on the lookout for ways to feel younger these days. I have a bad case of Old Jock Syndrome.

The L-screen is a simple concept: It’s netting on an aluminum frame shaped like a fat “L.” It has revolutionized batting practice in baseball.

Panther skipper is Coach and Mom of the Year

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Kelly Bevere — Coach of the Year. It rhymes.

Kelly Bevere — Mom of the Year. That also works.

Kelly’s Middlebury College softball team won 26 regular season games this spring, swept through the NESCAC tournament undefeated (3-0), and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Just a couple weeks later, she gave birth to Owen, a slugger, born on May 27, weighing in at nine pounds 15 ounces.

Pay homage to the count of baseball

Posted on May 12, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

ONE, TWO balls; ONE, TWO strikes. ONE out. ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX innings. I love to count!

Just about my favorite Sesame Street puppet was the Count, dressed as he was in his black cape, ticking off numbers in his thick Transylvanian accent. He helped all four of my children learn to count.

I think the Count could also help young baseball players learn the game.

A man with a message: 'play ball'

Posted on April 14, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

Charlie is the Messenger — and the message is “Play Ball! Have Fun!”

He loves baseball, knows the game, wants to see it played right, enjoys teaching kids the skills required to play the game. He’s effective at explaining the game’s complicated strategy and structure.

St. Patrick’s Day: I like it when my day to write this column falls on a holiday.

My first wife was born on St. Patrick’s Day, which made it easy for me to remember her birthday (editor’s note: no ex-wife wisecracks). My second wife’s birthday is Valentine’s Day, which I can also remember, but can’t get dinner reservations.

Rhymes with 'Block:' a real student-athlete

Posted on February 17, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

His name rhymes with “block” — and that’s what he does.

Andrew Locke is the stalwart 6’10” senior center for the Middlebury College basketball team, which is enjoying great success again this year. The Panthers have won 21 games against a single loss, and have earned a ranking in the top five NCAA Division III teams in the country.

A relic, a shrine, Hoop Heaven: a gym

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Karl Lindholm

What a coincidence!

I was in Maine visiting family last Saturday when the Middlebury basketball teams just happened to be in Lewiston to play against Bates College. So I decided to take in the men’s and women’s games (I actually watched Bates play Williams the night before, too).

Bates plays their basketball games in Alumni Gymnasium. Constructed in 1928, it’s the oldest New England college gym still hosting varsity basketball, and indeed one of the oldest such arenas in the country.

What would Jesus do: Perfect Form

Posted on December 23, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

What indeed would Jesus do?

Jesus Shuttlesworth, that is. That’s the name of the character Ray Allen plays in the Spike Lee movie, “He Got Game.” It’s a compelling film, especially since the protagonist is played by a basketball player, not an actor. (Those with small hoop-crazed children might wait before ordering — it’s rated R.)
