Matt Dickerson: Wild Wyoming cutthroat trout

Matt Dickerson col Cutthroat trout in Wyoming_4864.JPG

I’d been in Wyoming six days with barely a chance to wet my line. It was not for a lack of good-looking water. With the exception of a six-hour trip across a flat roasting high-altitude desert, I’d been crossing or driving alongside one beautiful river after another. Lovely. Enticing. And a bit frustrating since I was looking at them through a car window and not in my waders.

Matt Dickerson: The balm of brook trout

Dickerson fishing9826.jpg

It began with a trip to a river I have been fishing since I was 13 years old: the Little Androscoggin.

My school career began with kindergarten in the little Maine village of Bryant Pond, whose two thriving lumber mills helped support a population of 1,000, spread out over three villages in the town of Woodstock. Our house was just over the tracks and a good outfielder’s throw from the Little League field with the classic wooden grandstand that my fellow Independent sports columnist Karl Lindholm, who grew up less than an hour away, still remembers.

Matt Dickerson: A first run-in with a Vermont bowfin

Recently, I was reminded (yet again) of what amazing, abundant, and diverse fishing opportunities are available to anglers in Vermont. Within a short drive of Addison County one can find brook, brown, and rainbow trout in dozens of rivers and streams, and several mountain ponds. There are salmon and lake trout in Champlain and some inland lakes. Pike and smallmouth thrive in the bigger rivers and many ponds. You can also find muskies, walleye, perch, largemouth bass, fallfish and bullhead.

Matt Dickerson: Angler getting into hot water

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

It was the last day of May, but it felt more like the last day of June. On my way home a little after 5 p.m. the air temperature was still over 80 degrees F. And that was one of the cooler days of the past week. An hour or so later, when I got onto the Middlebury River with my waders and fly rod, the water temperature was in the upper 60s according to my stream thermometer. Given how warm and dry it had been, it wasn’t surprising to find the river was also running low, again more like late June or even July conditions.

Matt Dickerson: Chasing the trout chasers

Posted on May 18, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Matt Dickerson col Cadoret pike 7194.jpg

I had been on the river for less than an hour when I heard the distinctive “loot galoot” of a bittern. The sound brought back memories from 45 years earlier, and childhood fishing trips to northern Maine with my father pursuing wild brook trout. But this trip was in Vermont. And I was not pursuing trout. I was chasing after pike. Or, rather, hoping pike would do some chasing.

Matt Dickerson: Fishing back in home waters

Posted on May 4, 2016 |

It was the last day of April. At 11 a.m., the water temperature in the New Haven River was 49 degrees F. Still below the ideal metabolism all of Vermont’s trout species except lake trout, but I’ve caught trout in much colder water. More disturbing was how low and clear the river was. Looking at the exposed rocks, riffs and gravel bars I might have thought it was already mid June if the trees above me were not still scratching the sky with leafless sticks.

Matt Dickerson: Angler enjoys 'OK' fishing

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Another opening day of trout season has come and gone. Many anglers were enjoying the annual Fly Fishing Film Tour at the Town Hall Theater and the Otter Creek Classic fly-fishing tournament. Thanks to a lack of melting snow, they were fishing in the best early April fishing conditions Vermont has had in years. Sutton Doria won the pro division of the tournament with a record eight trout on opening weekend. Stephen Dokus, who won the amateur division, was not far behind with seven fish — enough total inches that he would have had second place even in the pro division.

My wife and I went to a museum last week. It was called a museum, anyway. But was more of a zoo, botanical garden, aviary and aquarium of native local plants and animals all rolled into one. And it was mostly outdoors.

My older brother Ted just visited me from Alaska.

All three of my brothers enjoy outdoor activities. They have all done some camping, hiking and fishing. But Ted is my brother who enjoys outdoor recreation the most. Perhaps even more than I do. Like me he grew up in small town New England and was raised on fishing and camping trips with our father in northern Maine.

So what do you call a collection of similar creatures? For most common animals you probably know. Wolves, coyotes and dogs gather in packs. Unless they are newborns, in which case we have a litter.

There are prides of lions and broods of chickens. A gathering of sheep is called a flock. So is a gathering of geese. Unless they are flying, in which case they are called a skein. Or if they are grounded they can be called a gaggle.
