ACRPC affirms support of Phase I pipeline

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Regional Planning Commission (ACRPC) board voted 23 to 9 on Wednesday evening, July 1, to affirm its support of Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

New recycling rules take effect this week

ADDISON COUNTY — Beginning this Wednesday, all residents of Vermont will be required to recycle metal, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard refuse in compliance with state’s Universal Recycling Law.

The law, also known as Act 148, is designed to greatly reduce Vermont’s levels of solid waste by phasing in bans on recyclables, leaf and yard debris, and food scraps from the landfill by the year 2020. The first phase of the law only prohibits the disposal of mandated recyclables.

$25K grant to help rural children

MIDDLEBURY — The Turrell Fund presented its 20th annual S. Whitney Landon Award to the Mary Johnson Children’s Center of Middlebury for their program “RFD” (“Rural Fun Delivery”). The award included an unrestricted grant of $25,000. Two other grants in the amount of $2,500 were granted to VSA Vermont and Greater Burlington YMCA.

Arts Beat for June 29, 2015: Festival kicks off with Rose's grit, charm

The Middlebury Summer Festival on-the-Green celebrates its 37th anniversary season during the week of July 5 through 11 at the Middlebury Recreation Park just south of the village center. The festival kicks off this Sunday at 7 p.m. with Caroline Rose, a rare mix of Northern grit and Southern charm whose musical influences trace back to her family’s Southern roots, running deep into the heart of Mississippi.

Hunt for prison escapees plays out near camp of local couple

MIDDLEBURY — Doug and Debby Anderson are the part owners of a camp in northern New York state to which they can occasionally escape from their daily routines in Middlebury, where they reside.

That word “escape” has now taken on a new meaning for them.

Their camp, in Mountain View, is located within the targeted area of a painstaking search for two escaped convicts from the Clinton Correctional Center, located just 20 miles away in Dannemora, N.Y.

Regulator rethinking gas pipeline

MONTPELIER — Opponents of Vermont Gas Systems natural gas pipeline said Tuesday that the expensive project is no longer necessary because technological advances have obviated the need for the product.

The comments came as the Vermont Public Service Board on Monday and Tuesday held technical hearings on whether to revoke the permit it granted to Vermont Gas for a 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury. The hearings were called to reconsider the Phase 1 permits due to significant cost increases.

FERRISBURGH — The Abenaki people of Vermont will celebrate their vibrant history and culture at Abenaki Heritage Weekend at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Ferrisburgh on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, June 28, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This is a fun-filled weekend of music, dance, storytelling, history and art, presented in partnership with the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs.

Annual Peasant Market is seeking donations for its July 11 event

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s annual Peasant Market will take place this year on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Middlebury town green.

A Middlebury tradition for decades, Peasant Market got its start as a “women’s fair” shortly after St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church was founded in 1827. The market took on its current name in the 1940s, and has been a local tradition ever since. All proceeds are donated to area nonprofits and service organizations. Last year’s market raised roughly $23,000.

Towns seek tax revenues from lake power line

ADDISON COUNTY — As the Vermont Public Service Board considers a permit for a proposed $1.2 billion electricity transmission line through Lake Champlain, local community planners are asking that the regulator not stop Addison County’s lakefront towns from taxing the underwater line.

If the permit does forestall such taxation, it could mean that Addison, Bridport, Shoreham and Orwell would miss out on up to $7 million in tax revenue, according to the Addison County Regional Planning Commission.
