Works of Viennese master who became Hallmark professor on display

MIDDLEBURY — EastView at Middlebury is hosting an exhibition of more than 20 paintings by Professor Frederick Jaeger, an exceptional artist and teacher who was active in Europe and America in the last century. Most of the 24 paintings have not been seen since before World War II, and never in the U.S.

The paintings come to the retirement community located off South Street Extension on loan from Jaeger’s son, George Jaeger of New Haven.

Trio to brass: keep 40th Army Band intact

MIDDLEBURY — If it weren’t for a federal rule stipulating retirement by age 60, Jim Lanpher, Peter Young and David Ingham would still be performing in the 40th Army Band of the Vermont National Guard.

For them, 117 years of combined service among them really wasn’t enough — they still occasionally show up at band rehearsals, instruments in tow, hoping for an invitation to join in.

UPS Store moves to former Lightning Photo property

ACSU asks for public input

MIDDLEBURY — All seven Addison Central Supervisory Union towns are hosting community forums this week and next to get public feedback on the district’s effort to establish a strategic plan that will clearly define and establish the ACSU’s educational priorities.

The forums will allow local school board members to hear residents’ thoughts on how public education might best be delivered to this and future generations of ACSU students.

Debate for Middlebury House candidates set for Sept. 23

MIDDLEBURY — Candidates running for the two Addison-I seats, the Vermont House district that represents Middlebury, have been invited to take part in a forum on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. and run to about 8:30 p.m., allowing time for the audience to ask questions of the candidates and time to visit with the candidates after the forum.

MIDDLEBURY — Former Gov. Jim Douglas burned through a lot of pens during his eight years as the state’s top executive, signing scores of new laws and proclamations.

Though almost four years out of office, the Middlebury Republican these past few weeks has again been putting his pen to the test — this time scrawling his signature on copies of his new political autobiography, titled “The Vermont Way: A Republican Governor Leads America’s Most Liberal State.”
