Man occupies tree to prevent pipeline work

MONKTON — Rising Tide activist Sam Jessup last Wednesday morning scaled a tree in Monkton in the path of the pipeline under construction in an effort to stop the building of the Addison Natural Gas Project.

Veteran educator Suzy Way to explore new horizons after retiring from Monkton Central

MONKTON — Retiring Monkton Central School teacher Suzy Way is planning big adventures in the coming years, including travel to places like Egypt, Morocco, England, Brazil and Germany. That same sense of adventure, enthusiasm for broader horizons and eagerness to learn about new things and new places lights up in her eyes when she talks about her students.

“They’re always eager to learn about the world,” said Way.

Monkton tree sitter cited for gas pipeline protest

MONKTON — After sitting in a tree in Monkton along the construction path of the Vermont Gas Systems natural gas pipeline for two weeks, Burlington resident Addie Herbert climbed down from the white pine on Friday, April 15.

Herbert was cited for criminal trespassing and released, the group Rising Tide Vermont announced late last week.

Heather Morse joins Greentree

MONKTON — Greentree Real Estate in Monkton welcomes Heather Morse as its seventh licensed real estate agent. Morse joined Greentree in April 2016 and has been a licensed Realtor since 2013.

Morse, a native Vermonter from New Haven, recently purchased her first home with her husband, Greg, in Charlotte. She graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2013 with a degree in architecture.

ANeSU seeks public input as it considers unification

MONKTON — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union’s Act 46 Study Committee is studying the benefits and challenges of complying with the law that encourages towns in supervisory unions to merge administration of their schools under a single budget that is overseen by one board.

The committee is seeking feedback from everyone in the five-town area. Committee members are specifically asking for community input on the benefits and challenges to help them weigh priorities and consider how to structure a possible union.

Monkton Republican Valerie Mullin hopes to join Baser in House

MONKTON — Monkton Republican Valerie Mullin in 2014 got her first taste of running for office, and she’s coming back this year for a second helping.

Only this time, she’s hoping to flip the script at the polls.

Mullin was one of four candidates who vied for the two Addison-4 House seats representing Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro. While she finished out of the running, she garnered a very respectable 1,514 votes from residents of the four towns.

Frogs and friends crossing safely with new Monkton tunnels

MONKTON — Two tunnels built under Monkton Road in Monkton last fall to give frogs, salamanders and other small creatures safe passage across the increasingly busy road are living up to expectations, according to early reports from amphibian experts.

Blazing the way: Monkton farm couple pioneers cheesemaking niche

In the cold Vermont darkness, Marjorie Susman and Marian Pollack slide into endlessly pocketed Carhartt pants and tall muck boots. It is February, and though the snow is gone, the earth is hard when they step out of their small farmhouse. Their breath hangs in faint wisps before disappearing in the early morning air. It is 5:30 a.m.

Pollack, 68, heads to the barn to milk their six Jersey cows, Clover, Hershey, Kudo, Pookah, Slinky and Bounty. Her boxy body moves briskly, gray shorn hair standing on end.

Monkton film company releases its first feature-length movie

MONKTON — Jonnie and Jennifer Corcoran developed a passion for film when they were growing up. Their mother wrote, directed, shot and edited 8mm and 16mm films, as well as plays. She introduced her children to Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Mister Magoo and, as they grew up in Italy, to the pantheon of iconic Italian filmmakers.
