MONKTON — Students at Monkton Central School recently got a special treat: Natalie Kinsey-Warnock, an author from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, came by to do writing workshops with the students and judge the William C. Shattuck Farming in Monkton writing contest.

Contest founders Eugenie Doyle and Sam Burr run Last Resort Farm in Monkton on land that they purchased from Bill Shattuck. His family had owned the land for 150 years before he sold it, and after his death, Doyle said she and her husband wanted to find a way to memorialize him.

Early morning fire destroys Monkton home

Posted on February 7, 2011 |
By Tamara Hilmes

MONKTON — On Wednesday morning, fire ravaged the Bristol Road home of Tom Cousino in Monkton.

According to Monkton Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Layn, the call was made by firefighter Robert Howard, who noticed the house was on fire on his way to work, around 6:45 a.m.

Cousino was asleep in the house at the time, but awoke coughing from the smoke. He climbed out of his bedroom window and slid down the shed roof, according to Layn.

After 37 years, Monkton clerk prepares to retire

By John Flowers

MONKTON — Longtime Monkton residents will notice a conspicuous omission on their Town Meeting Day ballot this year.

For the first time since 1973, Carmelita Burritt will not be running for town clerk. It will indeed be the end of an era in Monkton and the beginning of a new one, as Sharon Gomez is likely to become the community’s first new town clerk since the Nixon administration.

“It’s more and more work,” a smiling Burritt said on Monday. “I’m tired out.”

Students learn from surroundings

MONKTON — After tromping in shin-deep snow through some of the 11 eco-zones on the Willowell Foundation’s property off Stoney Meadow Lane in Monkton, we come to a clearing. I am sure I have stumbled upon some kind of Narnia, the fantasy land created by children’s author C.S. Lewis.

A large shelter insulated in old sails looms like a giant’s cave. The shelter’s frame is built of cedar beams the students harvested from the woods — without a single nail. The imposing structure will be replaced with a cabin this spring.

MONKTON — Monkton writer Eugenie Doyle released her most recent children’s novel, “According to Kit,” in 2009. More than a year later, recognition for the book is still coming in.

When the Society of School Librarians announced its annual book awards in late 2010, “According to Kit,“ published by Front Street Books, was among nine novels for grades 7-12 given an “honored book” designation.

By Tamara Hilmes

MONKTON — For the entire week spanning between Oct. 8 and 16, the town of Monkton will be putting on its Monkton Creates community celebration.

Arts-infused events ranging from a pie contest to artist receptions will be taking place at various locations around town throughout the week. While many of the events are free and open to the public, proceeds from the various potluck dinners, dances and silent auctions that do charge a fee will go toward funding the restoration of the East Monkton Church, the Boro Schoolhouse and the Russell Memorial Library.

Monkton bard shares folk music with kids

MONKTON — Sure, Pete Sutherland is busy. When the Monkton folk musician isn’t stringing together teaching gigs, concerts and artists’ residencies, there’s a good chance he’s setting up shop at a benefit barn dance, strumming away at any of the myriad string instruments he handles almost effortlessly.

The benefit dances and charity concerts come with the territory, he explained.

“If you’re going to be a community musician, you have to make time for that,” Sutherland said.

MONKTON — After years of planning, conservationists in Vermont are celebrating the creation of a new wildlife preserve on 362 acres at the intersection of Charlotte, Monkton and Hinesburg.

The conservation project is known as “Raven Ridge,” and was stitched together from a donation of more than 160 acres from Charlotte and Hinesburg landowners Raven Davis and Ed Everts, as well as the purchase of 201 acres from Monkton landowners John Paluska and Cynthia Brown.

MONKTON — Bristol resident and Williston elementary school teacher Susan Stewart will be taking the helm at Monkton Central School next year in the wake of the retirement of longtime principal Rich Jessup.

Jessup, who has worked at the elementary school for 20 years, retired on medical leave this past fall. Interim principals Richard Schattman and Edorah Frazer have led the school this year, but the Monkton school board decided to offer Stewart the full-time job as a permanent replacement at a board meeting last week.

Monkton town offices put on hold after vote

Posted on March 11, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

MONKTON — Monkton officials gunning for the construction of a new town hall and community center are regrouping after Monkton voters on Town Meeting Day narrowly defeated a $1.4 million bond to fund the proposed municipal building.

Voters defeated a proposed bond, 226 to 193.

Though the proposed bond did not win voters’ approval, chair of the Municipal Building Committee John Phillips said the committee was actually encouraged by the outcome of the vote.

“Given the economic situation, it was pretty close,” said Phillips, who also sits on the town selectboard.
