Ripton school evaluating holiday observances

Posted on November 11, 2010 |
By John Flowers

RIPTON — Ripton Elementary School officials are seeking community input on how students can mark the holiday season as part of their learning experience.

The outreach comes in the wake of decision by school officials to take a pass on typical Halloween activities this year in favor of a more general celebration of the fall and Thanksgiving. The school community has, in its recent history, marked Halloween with the reading of scary stories and the donning of costumes, among other things. Some activities had been co-organized by the Ripton Elementary parent-teacher organization.

Ripton eyes plan to thwart floods

Posted on November 16, 2009 |
By John Flowers

RIPTON — Ripton residents this Tuesday, Nov. 17, will be asked for their feedback on a plan to buttress and stabilize a key stretch of the Middlebury River to prevent it from flooding the village during major storm events. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Ripton Community House.

The river in August of 2008 jumped its banks and flooded portions of Ripton village. Areas along the north bank of the channel were severely eroded during a major storm that month and portions of Route 125 both upstream and downstream of Ripton village got washed out.

RIPTON — Ensconced in a former farmhouse tucked away amid the tree-filled slopes of Ripton, one could already argue that attending classes at the North Branch School is akin to going back to nature.

But the more than two-dozen students and faculty at North Branch took that concept a step further last week, as part of their contribution to the more than 5,200 worldwide global warming action events that occurred on Oct. 24 through the efforts of 350.org.

RIPTON – “This was the man was meant me; that he should come/So near his time, and miss it!”

So says Beatrice-Joanna in The Changeling, meeting Alsemero just after her father has promised her to another man.
