ANeSU to bring in a mediator; board hopes to improve climate

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee at a special meeting Thursday pledged to address what it characterized as a “deteriorated environment” in the district’s six schools.

“The committee recognizes the need for an immediate assessment of current conditions,” the committee said in a prepared statement.

Opinion: ANeSU is right on track

I have been closely following the events in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union — the failed budgets of some of our schools as well as the issues that have arisen around the leadership of Superintendent David Adams. I have attended many meetings of different boards over the past month as the community and employees of the district have sought to gain insight and clarity into the situation.

Opinion: Message clear on budget defeats

Posted on April 27, 2015 |
By Jim Feldhousen

What is the mystery with the Bristol school budgets?

Both Bristol school budgets were voted down twice. The second time had the same budget amounts as the first time. The school boards are having trouble understanding why the second time failed. Hopefully for the next budget re-vote, the proposed budgets will be significantly lower.

Opinion: Support urged for Pathways

Fund the Pathways program at Mount Abraham Union High School. Fully.

Recently I was made aware that the support staff positions in the Pathways program were going to be cut if the budget was passed. The budget has not been passed yet, so I am relieved, but not at ease. The termination of these positions would be doing an unimaginable disservice to the students at Pathways.

Addison Northeast, Addison Central and Addison Northwest supervisory unions — which cover 17 towns in the Bristol, Middlebury and Vergennes areas — all will support some sort of publicly funded preschool programs in 2015-2016.

What is publicly funded preschool?

Publicly funded preschool is defined as 10 hours per week (35 weeks per year, September-June) of developmentally appropriate early learning experiences based on Vermont’s Early Learning Standards.

Voters reject Mount Abe, Bristol school budgets again

Posted on April 16, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — Voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union rejected two of the three school budgets up for consideration Tuesday. It is the latest chapter in a tumultuous spring for the district, which has also seen a citizens petition calling for the removal of the superintendent and a near-unanimous vote of no confidence in his leadership by the teachers’ union.

Residents rejected spending plans for Mount Abraham Union High School by a tally of 755 to 485, and Bristol Elementary School, 224 to 166.

$4.9 million Bristol Elementary budget on ballot this Tuesday

Posted on April 9, 2015 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — Bristol residents on Tuesday will cast ballots on a new Bristol Elementary School spending plan for next year that shaves a fraction of a percent off the proposal they defeated on Town Meeting Day. But despite asking for $2,700 less in spending, the new budget would restore some instructional positions targeted to be cut by reducing spending in other areas.

Opinion: Policies fail ANeSU boards

Posted on April 8, 2015 |
By Dick Merrill

It has never been a secret that I have always believed that the school boards in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union were shirking their duties. It has gotten terribly worse with the crippling effects resulting from the adoption of the Vermont Superintendents Association version of policy governance.
