BRISTOL — Leaves are ablaze with fiery colors and a crispness floats in the air so autumn must truly be here. Folks in Bristol will mark the change in season this Saturday with the 16th annual Harvest Festival, when families, neighbors and visitors gather on the town green for food, art and craft vendors, music and fun activities for the kids.

The event on the green will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with many ways to enjoy the day — and there will be a couple other activities off the green, too.

BRISTOL — A spirited debate about a new playground on the town green has sprung up between residents in the past several weeks. Some described the not-yet-completed playground as an eyesore, while others chimed in to defend the months of hard work of playground organizers.

The discussion began with a series of posts on Front Porch Forum both criticizing and praising the playground project.

“The new playground is the ugliest thing I have ever seen,” wrote Scott and Stacie Ayotte on Aug. 29.

BRISTOL — A town institution is for sale in Bristol, but the owners say business is doing just fine.

Almost Home Market co-owner Beth Marr said she and fellow owner Gary Smith are selling the store, which has been a fixture of Bristol’s North Street for a decade.

“My business partner is not able to fulfill his partnership because of illness and I never intended on taking it solo,” Marr said, adding that she wants to pursue other interests.

ADDISON COUNTY — Most property owners in the five-town area are seeing higher tax bills than last year.

Selectboards in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro set municipal tax rates in the past month or so to pay for town staffing obligations and highway spending.

Town leaders have also received final homestead and non-residential school tax rates from the state, allowing towns to send out 2014-2015 tax bills. Each of the five towns are served by the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.
