Does your garden finish the year with a beautiful glorious bang, or does it just fade away with a whimper?

Summer’s exuberance may be over but, in its own way, the autumn garden can be every bit as lovely. At this time of year the gardener’s palette includes yellows and bronze, lavender and purple, dusky pinks and whites. There are colorful shrubs and beautiful grasses, plus some easily grown perennials, which all harmonize together to complete the gardening season with a flourish.

On gardening: Dancing grasses — magical movements in our gardens

Posted on September 8, 2014 |
By Judith Irven

Garden pix 9-04-14_5256.jpg

Rhythmic motion captivates as it soothes — a group of dancers twirling in time with the music or the wind rippling through a field of uncut hay.

And in the garden motion always delights — as a host of swallowtail butterflies swarm over the spring lilacs, or a flock of cedar waxwings swoop in to feast on the ripening crabapples.

Garden column 8 21, 2014 D71-0389.jpg

“A garden should be in a constant state of fluid change, expansion, experiment, adventure; above all it should be an inquisitive, loving but self-critical journey on the part of its owner.”

— H.E. Bates

All gardening is landscape painting

Posted on August 7, 2014 |
By Judith Irven

D90-1213_0.jpg

The well-known garden quote, penned over 200 years ago by landscape designer William Kent, that is the headline for this week’s column still rings true today. Creating a beautiful garden is akin to making pictures where you, the artist, get to choose the plants and manipulate them on your canvas to create a vibrant glorious whole.

Greg Dennis: Growing the $3,000 tomato

Posted on May 29, 2014 |
By Gregory Dennis

This is the story of the thousand-dollar tomato.

Or, “How Our Hero (I Use the Word Loosely), an Inexperienced Gardener with More Money than Sense, Started His Garden Late, and Expensively.”

It all began not with the need for a garden, but for a vacation. The annual mid-summer escape to Maine was a distant dream when I began casting about for something to break up the work months between Christmas and August.

Spring Blues are popping up in the garden

Spring blues are popping in the garden_7413.jpg

Blue is the color of a crystal clear sky at midday. Although its intensity ranges from brilliant sapphire opposite the sun, to the palest baby blue near the horizon, it is true blue.

Blue flowers are also beloved by gardeners, and yet they seem really hard to find. There are plenty of flowers with overtones of red — pinkish-blue, mauve, purple and lavender — mostly blooming in summer and fall.

NEW HAVEN — In a rural region like Addison County, nearly everyone, even people not involved in agricultural businesses, sees a farm almost every day. Not surprisingly, many people develop an interest in getting their hands in the soil and taking part in agriculture at the level of the home garden.
