Opinion: Battle against GMOs justified

Posted on September 8, 2014 |
By Randy Kritkausky

Gregory Dennis’s “Between the Lines” column (Aug. 28) challenging liberal doctrine is a laudable example of one Vermonter’s willingness to respectfully challenge widespread dogma. In that same spirit, I would like to clarify reasons for concern about GMOs that transcend political ideology.

Opinion: Vermonters could benefit from more nuanced debate

Posted on September 3, 2014 |
By Judy and Michael Olinick

Responding to Greg Dennis’ Aug. 28 column: It’s unfortunate that so little opportunity for genuine debate exists anywhere, including in Congress, state legislatures and the Supreme Court. When ordinary people address very controversial subjects in government hearings, town meetings or even letters to the editor, time and space are usually so tightly limited we can barely make our own points, let alone grant concessions to the opposition.

Greg Dennis: The tweet life, 140 characters long

Posted on September 19, 2013 |
By Gregory Dennis

When Twitter announced it was planning to sell stock to the public and make its founders richer than God, millions of people responded to the news by wondering, “How can a company named after bird sounds be worth $10 billion?”

Millions of other people scratched their heads and wondered, “What in the world is Twitter?”

It’s a social networking (or, if you prefer, “microblogging”) service that until recently limited users to 140-character messages. Photos are now possible, but most users stick with word updates.

Greg Dennis: Turning up the 'Summer Heat' on coal

Posted on August 8, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

It’s an impossibly beautiful summer morning in Vermont — and I’m leaving the state on the last Saturday of July to go sit in a dirty church basement in Providence, R.I.

My travel takes me south through the mountain towns of Jamaica and Townshend along Route 30. There’s a farmer’s market along the way, and in another town they’re getting ready for a parade.

On the shortcut through Brattleboro I pass the old ski jump on the edge of town, near signs protesting a skateboard park.

Between the Lines: Bob Dylan hiding in plain sight

Posted on July 25, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

The Dylan tickets arrived in the mail a couple weeks before last Sunday’s show at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I’d spent a ridiculous amount of money to get the best seats.

Dylan is 72 and he’s been a smoker forever and survived a weird heart ailment. So if you’re a fan, you always have to wonder if the next Dylan show you see will be the last one.

And having seen him perform in hayfields, outdoor venues, and cavernous basketball arenas, I wanted just once to see him up close.

Between the Lines: Death, drugs dominated legislative debates

Posted on May 30, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Memories of the recently ended session of the Vermont Legislature have, for all but the politically addicted, faded with the late spring heat.

But it’s worth taking a quick look back at the session, which will be remembered for two landmark pieces of legislation that will touch many Vermonters.

Between the Lines: Farming Vermont for wind power

Posted on April 18, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Sometimes it seems like environmentalists have put themselves on such a state of red alert that we can’t see a good thing when it’s right in front of us.

We’re so used to fighting every inappropriate intrusion upon Mother Earth, that even the idea of using wind to provide electrical power can seem like a threat.

So when they could be organizing to support alternative energy sources such as wind farms, a few environmentalists have decided that because wind power, like any energy source, has some small drawbacks, wind is a bad idea altogether.

Greg Dennis: In quary photos, Vermont rediscovered

Posted on April 4, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

We are surrounded by marble and granite, so much so that we rarely give it a thought. Much of the state is made of the stuff, our mountains and courthouses and old inns.

Marble and granite are among our most famous exports. When we see TV images of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, we are looking at pieces of Vermont.

What happens, though, when we see the stone itself as art?

Greg Dennis: Of pipelines and pie at town meeting

Posted on March 7, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Winston Churchill said of democracy that it is “the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” That may also be a good description of Vermont town meeting.

Voters at town meeting are asked to make decisions through a process that can be imprecise, contentious, confusing and ill informed.

Between the Lines: In D.C., climate voices for the future

Posted on February 21, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Most Americans have never joined a political demonstration.

That’s too bad. Because as I was reminded again last Sunday while joining yet another demonstration, it can be tons of fun.

The rally this time was “Forward on Climate,” a boisterous gathering in Washington, D.C., of 35,000 people, who called on President Obama to block the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

The future of the pipeline is up to Obama because it would cross the Canada-U.S. border to bring the dirtiest oil on the planet from Alberta to refineries in the southern U.S.
