Opinion: Distracted driving costs lives

This is in response to a letter from a reader who disagreed with proposed legislation, H.62, now pending in the Vermont House, titled: An Act Relating to Prohibiting the Handheld Use of a Portable Electronic Device While Driving. This reader claimed she was an experienced driver, and could easily talk on a cell phone while driving.

Sick leave bill advances in legislature

BRISTOL — A bill that would require many Vermont businesses to allow their employees to accrue paid sick time is advancing in the House, where the measure has unleashed a great deal of debate about the potential impact on businesses.

That bill, H.208, was one of several topics discussed at Monday’s legislative breakfast in Bristol.

Cost of health care transistion is still unclear

WHITING — With 2017 fast approaching, Addison County residents are pressing lawmakers to estimate the cost of Vermont’s proposed conversion to a single-payer health care system. Act 48, passed by the Legislature in 2011, called for a detailed plan for a single-payer health system by 2017, and a financing scheme was due last year.

Lawmakers discuss pipeline regulation

WHITING  — Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Whiting drew several Cornwall residents who urged lawmakers to slow down or suspend a Public Service Board review of Vermont Gas Systems’s proposed “Phase II” natural gas pipeline. The $70 million project is designed to deliver natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Changes to Current Use law debated by legislators

MONTPELIER — The Vermont House and Senate agriculture committees are gearing up for a showdown over changes to the state’s flagship land conservation program.

A special study committee chaired by Sen. Bobby Starr, D-Essex/Orleans, struck all the language from a bill that passed the House in 2013. The Senate version — still a rough draft — was discussed at the Statehouse on Tuesday evening at the fifth and final in a series of public hearings.

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Paul Ralston, D-Middlebury, has co-authored legislation he believes will inject new vitality into Vermont’s business sector without spending a lot of new money.

It’s known as H.736 — dubbed “Unlocking Vermont’s Economic Potential” bill — aimed at protecting and growing Vermont’s current industries, while encouraging and rewarding entrepreneurs and innovators in new technology and knowledge-based businesses, according to Ralston.
