Community Forum: Businesses limit energy waste

Posted on August 12, 2013 |
By Lawrence Miller

This week’s writer is Lawrence Miller, Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development secretary. Jim Merriam, director of Efficiency Vermont, contributed.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. In Vermont, this holds especially true. Vermont has more than 75,000 small employers, comprising a staggering 96 percent of the companies in the state. With more than 157,000 workers, the small business sector accounts for nearly 60 percent of our state’s total workforce.

Clippings: Aging brings quirky benefits

Posted on July 25, 2013 |
By John Flowers

It seems like only yesterday that my grandmother drove me down to the federal offices in Portland, Maine, to get my Social Security card. This American kid — who had lived abroad for several years — was finally “legal” to get a job, sock away some retirement benefits, and perhaps get drafted into the military.

Between the Lines: Bob Dylan hiding in plain sight

Posted on July 25, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

The Dylan tickets arrived in the mail a couple weeks before last Sunday’s show at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I’d spent a ridiculous amount of money to get the best seats.

Dylan is 72 and he’s been a smoker forever and survived a weird heart ailment. So if you’re a fan, you always have to wonder if the next Dylan show you see will be the last one.

And having seen him perform in hayfields, outdoor venues, and cavernous basketball arenas, I wanted just once to see him up close.

Ways of Seeing: To deepen your experience, slow down

Posted on July 25, 2013 |
By Abi Sessions

You’re probably familiar with Slow Food, the international movement whose aim is to promote local and culturally specific foods. Even if you’re not familiar with Slow Food as an organization, you may be part of the movement; if you’ve had the traditional fried dough and maple cotton candy at Field Days, I think you’re probably in.

I support the mission of Slow Food. I’m also a fan of a related idea: Slow Travel.

Around the Bend: House cooling plans full of hot air

Posted on June 6, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last Saturday night, during a period of heat-induced delirium, I briefly reconsidered my longstanding opposition to air conditioning.

My inner stoic Vermonter says A/C this far north is a sign of weakness and a waste of money. True, I am not stoic by nature or a Vermonter by birth, but I still believe artificial cooling is for sissies. Just Saturday afternoon, in fact, I had been bragging to a friend that our bedroom is always cool enough for sleeping, even during heat waves.

I swear I never heard the minor piano chords threatening in the background.

Ways of Seeing: Anger should be handled like fire

Posted on June 6, 2013 |
By Joanna Colwell

I was talking on the phone with a dear friend, and boy was she mad! She was so angry that her voice had a hard edge to it, her breathing was rapid, and my chest felt tight just listening to her speak. Her emotion was so immediate, so current, so fresh. The incident at the root of the rage? It happened 24 years ago.

Here’s the thing about anger. It is like a fire that makes us hot. When we tell the story of what someone did to us that made us so angry, we are feeding the fire, adding more and more dry kindling to encourage the blaze.

Politically Thinking: Shumlin faces re-election pitfalls

Posted on May 30, 2013 |
By Eric Davis

Recent Vermont history shows that governors lose support the longer they stay in office. Jim Douglas’ vote share declined from his first re-election in 2004 through his last re-election in 2008, and Howard Dean faced challenging campaigns in his last two re-elections, in 1998 and 2000. The same trend may be starting for Peter Shumlin.

Between the Lines: Death, drugs dominated legislative debates

Posted on May 30, 2013 |
By Greg Dennis

Memories of the recently ended session of the Vermont Legislature have, for all but the politically addicted, faded with the late spring heat.

But it’s worth taking a quick look back at the session, which will be remembered for two landmark pieces of legislation that will touch many Vermonters.
