Grooming intensifies as 4-Hers prep livestock for the fair

Records, fun mark 7th Maple Run

MIDDLEBURY — Two course records were set at the seventh annual Middlebury Maple Run this past Sunday as the 700-plus runners complete the 13.1-mile course under sunny skies, a brisk south wind, and temperatures that started in the mid-50s and rose to the mid-70s by midday. While the temperatures were ideal, the brisk headwinds from the south presented some challenge to runners along the exposed Sheep Farm Road in Weybridge and along South Street for miles 9 through 11, before being a tailwind for the last two-miles of the race.

Prosecutors: Man drove drunk and killed Middlebury man bicycling in Weybridge

MIDDLEBURY — Twenty-seven-year-old Nathan Dearing, who had been barred from driving, got behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol and killed a 55-year-old Middlebury man who was bicycling with his wife in Weybridge early Tuesday evening, Addison County prosecutors allege.

Weybridge charter change pitched

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge officials are proposing to change the municipality’s charter in a manner that would allow for its town clerk and treasurer to be appointed by the selectboard, rather than elected by the public.

This means that the person or people taking these positions would no longer have to reside in the town of Weybridge and would be appointed by the selectboard. Panton approved a similar charter change last year.

Pulp Mill Bridge to be closed for three weeks

MIDDLEBURY — The historic Pulp Mill Bridge in Middlebury will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic for about three weeks beginning on Monday, Jan. 26, to allow for a work crew to repair damage caused by a single-vehicle accident that occurred in the bridge this past fall.

The covered bridge, which links the towns of Middlebury and Weybridge on Seymour Street Extension, will re-open on or about Monday, Feb. 16. Until then, motorists, bikers and walkers should seek alternative routes.

Police look for stolen rings

WEYBRIDGE — Vermont State Police are investigating the theft of an unspecified number of wedding rings from an office at the Morgan Horse Farm at 74 Battell Drive in Weybridge. The thefts took place during the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 15.

Police said the owner of the rings had taken them off and placed them on her office desk while applying hand lotion. While conducting business on the grounds, she realized that she had forgotten the rings and returned to her office to see that the jewelry was missing.

Weybridge barn destroyed by fire

WEYBRIDGE — Around 20 Weybridge and New Haven firefighters responded to a blaze this morning that destroyed a horse barn at 1572 Quaker Village Road.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at around 9 a.m., according to Weybridge Fire Chief Bill Sinks. By then, the barn was fully involved.

“There was nothing we could really do to save the building,” Sinks said of the roughly 30-foot-by-40-foot structure. He identified the owner as Cindy Strate.

Same-sex marriage rooted in Weybridge

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont had the distinction in 2000 of becoming the first state in the union to approve a civil unions law, through which same-sex couples were extended many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Nine years later, Vermont became the first state to approve a same-sex marriage law without being required to do so by a court decision.

Court Log: Weybridge teen charged with assaulting police

WEYBRIDGE — A local teen on Monday pleaded innocent in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division, to three misdemeanor counts of simple assault on a police officer, stemming from an Aug. 23 incident in Weybridge.

Sabrina R. Landon, 18, of Weybridge is also accused of resisting arrest and being a minor in possession of a malt beverage (criminal count).
