Tari Shattuck grants boost five-town elementary schools

BRISTOL — The Tari Shattuck Educational Foundation of Bristol recently funded nine projects in the elementary schools of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union to support innovative educational opportunities developed by local teachers. This school year, as part of its support of excellence in teaching and learning in ANeSU, the foundation is granting up to $1,000 for projects to each of the ANeSU elementary schools.

Red Cedar School's Werner-Gavrin nominated for 'Life-Changer' award

BRISTOL — Jacquie Werner-Gavrin, founder and director of the Red Cedar School in Bristol, has been nominated for the 2015-2016 national LifeChanger of the Year award.

Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, the LifeChanger of the Year program recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Werner-Gavrin was nominated by parent William Aikman.

Estimates call for lower school taxes in most ANwSU towns

VERGENNES — Residential school tax rates are now expected to drop in four out of five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union communities, according to new estimates released this week by ANwSU officials.

They revised their estimates — which are lower than those published in ANwSU annual town reports — after the Legislature agreed late in January to make changes to school-funding provisions in Act 46, Vermont’s new education law that also promotes school consolidation.

Five candidates vie for two spots on New Haven selectboard

NEW HAVEN — Both of the New Haven selectboard incumbents who are running for re-election will face challengers on Town Meeting Day.

Kathleen Barrett, currently chair of the selectboard, will stand for a three-year seat against New Haven Planning Commission member Dan Monger. Selectboard member Carole Hall is running against Bridget Kipp and John Roleau for a two-year seat.

Meanwhile, Ed McGuire is running unopposed for re-election to his three-year seat as a Beeman school director.

Google's search ends at local school; Addison boy wins national contest

VERGENNES — Eleven-year-old Addison resident Louis Provencher spent plenty of time this past weekend playing his favorite video games, including “Clash of the Clans.”

It was a little more fun than usual because he could load the games on his brand-new computer tablet, which he got on Friday from Google. That’s right, representatives from the Internet behemoth on Friday morning surprised Provencher in a school-wide assembly at the Champlain Valley Christian School in Vergennes.

New raw cheese rule could harm Vermont industry

124 grads ski to their reward — a diploma

MIDDLEBURY/HANCOCK — Surrounded by cheering throngs of family and friends, 124 Middlebury seniors celebrated the completion of their undergraduate careers on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Mead Chapel.

Middlebury’s “Febs” — so called because the majority of them started their college education here in February 2012 — will earn their official bachelor of arts degrees on March 1. But this past weekend the college held several events to celebrate the graduates’ achievements.

Selectboard race shapes up in Bristol

BRISTOL — The one contested race on the Bristol ballot this Town Meeting Day will be for a three-year seat on the town selectboard.

Incumbent Brian Fox, the current selectboard chair, is running for re-election against challengers Joshua Clark and Ted Lylis.

Experts: Vermont could lower school costs

MONTPELIER — After listening to hours of testimony on the good the bad and the ugly that school districts have endured trying to build budgets under a spending cap under Act 46, the House Committee on Education on Tuesday voted in favor of raising the spending threshold for every school district in the state by 0.9 percent for FY 2017.

The fix is meant to accommodate an unforeseen increase in health care costs and it has the support of Speaker of the House Shap Smith.
