Embezzlement case dismissed, but Dozier still in jeopardy

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — A Rutland County judge has dismissed the embezzlement charge against a former employee of the Brandon Inn without prejudice, but the case against Carmen M. Dozier may take a federal turn.

As of Nov. 17, the case is technically closed in Rutland County Superior Court, criminal division, but authorities said federal charges may be pending for Dozier, 39, of Rutland. If a charge is “dismissed without prejudice” that means the same charge can be re-filed by the state at a later date.

MONTPELIER — Vermont Agriculture Secretary Chuck Ross is encouraging all Vermont dairy farmers to enroll in the Margin Protection Dairy Insurance Program, or MPP. Last week the USDA extended the application deadline to Dec. 19 (the deadline had been Dec. 5).

“Dairy farming in Vermont has many risks. The Margin Protection Program is a means to manage the risk of dropping milk prices and rising feed costs,” Ross said in a press release.

MIDDLEBURY — Bill McKibben, one of America’s highest profile climate activists, is stepping down as the board chair of 350.org, the environmental organization he co-founded.

He’ll remain involved with the group that he and a group of Middlebury College students started in 2007 as a “senior adviser,” a role he said entails less day-to-day managing and more large-scale project planning.

Musicians to perform in support of food shelf

Posted on December 8, 2014 |
By John Flowers

Clint2732.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It’s not unusual for aspiring musicians to simply play for food or drink as compensation for a gig in order to get a foot in the entertainment door. Clint Bierman and his band, The Grift, are fortunate enough to have the talent and reputation that ensures their performances are rewarded with a paycheck rather than free beer or leftovers from a buffet table.

But on Monday, Dec. 22, Bierman and around 15 other well-known Vermont acts will go back to playing for food — this time for the benefit of others who might otherwise go hungry.

By John Flowers

SwapandShop2753.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — It can be tough for teens to fill out their wardrobes given the current price of clothing and the cost and hassle of getting to some of the regional fashion hubs.

Jutta Miska, co-director of the Addison Central Teens organization, knows the problem well and two years ago came up with a novel way of bringing affordable clothing directly to local youths at Middlebury Union High School. It’s called the “Two-Day Clothing Swap & Shop,” and it will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Wednesday, Dec. 10, at MUHS.
