Same-sex marriage rooted in Weybridge

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont had the distinction in 2000 of becoming the first state in the union to approve a civil unions law, through which same-sex couples were extended many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Nine years later, Vermont became the first state to approve a same-sex marriage law without being required to do so by a court decision.

Middlebury eyes two-deck structure for more parking

MIDDLEBURY — An organization representing downtown Middlebury property owners is requesting that the town import and install a temporary parking structure to make up for the long-term loss of approximately 50 spaces during replacement of the railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

As with our homes, every garden must meet certain functional needs, such as providing easy access from driveway to doorway. Phase I pipeline inches southward

WILLISTON — Even as the first snowflakes of the year fell in the Champlain Valley Thursday, it was easy for any observer to note the progress construction crews have made on Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

A tour hosted by Vermont Gas Systems officials shuttled reporters to different sites around Chittenden County where workers are digging trenches and laying pipe.

Another teen missing in five-town area

BRISTOL — Bristol police said Thursday that they are looking for a 17-year-old Mount Abraham Union High School student who did not return home after class Tuesday.

Police said Shawn Lussier was last seen at the recreation field around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. He is 5' 10", around 180 lbs. and has brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and camoflauge baseball hat.

Middlebury town office costs to be felt next year

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Monday got a look at the first draft of a fiscal year 2016 municipal budget that projects a $430,259 increase over this year, which would translate into a 5.6-cent boost in the town’s tax rate.

Board members stressed that the $10,031,448 spending plan under review is just a departure point, and that the final number will likely shrink before being finalized for the voters to decide at the annual town meeting next March.

But officials acknowledged making significant cuts won’t be easy.

Bailey to take place of Cliver on Brandon selectboard

BRANDON — A former banking professional has been has been appointed to the Brandon selectboard.

The board approved the appointment of Doug Bailey at a regular meeting Monday night, filling the seat vacated by Blaine Cliver, who retired from the board last month.

Bailey was one of four applicants for the position. The others were Dennis Reisenweaver, Jeff Stewart and Seth Hopkins.

Ilsley Library eyes its space needs

MIDDLEBURY — Ilsley Library Trustee John Freidin on Monday updated the Middlebury selectboard on the library’s ongoing effort to look at its program needs and determine the best way to house them within the Ilsley building on Main Street.

Trustees have formed a committee to tackle to the issue. That panel, headed by Freidin, has circulated a public survey and visited five other libraries that have recently undertaken renovation/expansion projects.

VUHS senior walk raises money, builds community

VERGENNES/MONKTON/STARKSBORO — The annual Vergennes Union High School senior class charity walk-a-thon became more of a hike-a-thon as members of the school’s highest grade traveled by foot from the Willowell Foundation property in Monkton over Hogback Mountain to Starksboro’s Common Ground Center on Oct. 9. The annual fundraiser brought in more than $4,000 to help Camp Kaleidoscope, which serves for families with children on the autism spectrum.
