UPDATE: Swimming beach closed at Branbury State Park

SALISBURY -- Vermont State Parks officials on Friday closed the swimming beach at Branbury State Park in Salisbury.

They said a swim water sample taken last Wednesday showed an extremely low ecoli reading (6 per 100 ml of water), but officials said the beach was been closed “as a prudent precaution” after the Vermont Department of Health received several reports of sickness by recent Branbury park visitors.

MIDDLEBURY — We’ve all seen footage of what happens to a stranded car sitting in the path of an oncoming freight train.

The freight train always wins.

And when it comes to a dispute between a municipality and a freight train, the train seems to have the advantage — a likelihood that Middlebury officials and merchants are learning in their call for modifications to the Vermont Rail Systems (VRS) train schedules during the upcoming replacement of two downtown rail overpasses.

Farmer ready to fire air cannon to protect crop, but talks with neighbors set

FERRISBURGH — Although there is still time for a negotiated solution, the Ferrisburgh farmer who upset his lakefront neighbors a year ago by firing a propane cannon to protect his sweet corn crop said this week he is prepared to use the cannon again as soon as next week.

Wayne Stearns, owner of Crazy Acres Farm on Schoolhouse Road, said if the flock of starlings that lives on his farm starts attacking his corn, he is considering deploying a cannon that in 2014 fired thousands of times a day for about a month.

Curtain to rise on inaugural Middlebury film festival

MIDDLEBURY — After narrowing a field of more than 300 film submissions down to 95 final selections; arranging space in 10 local establishments for events and discussions; planning a party with two bands, food and drink on the Middlebury town green; and nailing down all of the little details, organizers are just about ready to invite the world to Addison County’s shire town next week for the inaugural Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF).

Floodgates: Insurance firms haggle after sewer floods family's home

MIDDLEBURY — It was far from the Father’s Day gift that Middlebury resident Jeffrey Schnoor had been expecting.

While other dads were engaged in fun family activities back on June 21, Schnoor and his wife, Leilani, were frantically dealing with a major household disaster wrought by thousands of gallons of nasty sewer water that suddenly spewed from the first-floor toilet of their North Pleasant Street home.

Bristol to vote Tuesday on joining trash district

BRISTOL — Bristol residents will vote next Tuesday on joining the Addison County Solid Waste Management District. Voting will be by Australian ballot, and the polls at Holley Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Aug 25.

Voters will face two questions. First, should Bristol join the Addison County Solid Waste Management District, which manages the garbage transfer station in Middlebury and other solid waste issues for all of the county except Bristol and Salisbury.

Murray to head Middlebury planning office

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously approved the hiring of Jennifer Murray, a senior conservation planner for the town of Williston, as Middlebury’s new director of planning and zoning. She will officially begin her duties on Aug. 31.

Murray has more than 15 years of experience as an environmental project manager and planner, both in Vermont and in rural upstate New York. In her cover letter, Murray professed particular interest in “community development in small rural towns.”

Bixby art exhibit offers demonstration, audience participation

VERGENNES — Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes announces an exhibition of new works by Ripton artist and teacher Jean Cherouny. The show, titled simply “OPEN,” begins on Friday, Aug. 28, with a reception, demonstration and chances for audience participation.  All are invited to the opening, from 5-7 p.m, part of Vergennes’ monthly summer Arts Walk. Just drop in, or plan to view the entire five-act performance.
