Area students engineer victories

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School student Emily Anderson has plenty of time to choose a career path. But it would be no stretch to say she would have a bright future in engineering.

Anderson was one of four MUHS students to win top honors at this summer’s Governor’s Institutes of Vermont (GIV) Engineering Institute, an annual, week-long educational program hosted by the University of Vermont. Three Mount Abraham Union High School students also earned first-place awards at the institute, held at the end of July in Burlington.

Preservation Trust busy after storm

Posted on September 15, 2011 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BURLINGTON — Brandon’s historic downtown is more or less intact despite the massive Aug. 28 flood, but there are historic villages across Vermont that have been irreparably damaged, like those in Wilmington and Waterbury.

“Wilmington’s downtown was decimated,” said Paul Bruhn, executive director of the Preservation Trust of Vermont. “There are storefronts, one after another, that just aren’t there anymore.”

MIDDLEBURY — Lars Hubbard has made his living in a multitude of ways throughout the years, including as a chef, executive, entrepreneur and software designer.

He chalks up his diverse career choices to a credo he lives by: “I hate to be boring.”

And no one can accuse him of being boring with his latest plan: Acquiring (out of foreclosure) the 6,000-square-foot office building at 88 Mainelli Road in Middlebury and turning it into a distillery, cheese-making facility and headquarters for his small firm, known as The Friday Group LLC.

Nude man in Bristol not busted

Posted on September 15, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — When a blue minivan with Florida license plates pulled into the Bristol Maplefields on West Street at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, onlookers could barely believe their eyes: A male driver got out of the car completely unclothed.

“The only things he was wearing was a pair of sandals and a credit card,” Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs reported.

On seeing the nude man, a bystander immediately called the police. But contrary to what the caller and some fellow bystanders apparently expected, the police did not arrest the man.

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Inn and hotel operators in Addison County and Brandon are concerned that Vermont’s recent portrayal as a storm-ravaged state might be discouraging some prospective tourists. But they remain buoyed last week by rebuilding efforts and are confident that bookings will be strong for the critical fall foliage season.

But as roads washed out, power went down and travel throughout the state became increasingly difficult, Internet technology and social media stepped into the spotlight.

Panton struggles with the upkeep of historic building

Posted on September 12, 2011 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

PANTON — A small group of Panton residents last week rejected a plan to borrow $40,000 to repair the cupola that sits atop Panton Town Hall, but town selectmen may not yet be ready to order its removal.

Panton officials have in recent years discussed renovations to Town Hall that would include bathrooms and a kitchen that could transform the building into a community and visitors’ center.

But first they must deal with the structure’s leaky roof, and that means solving the problem of the deteriorating cupola.

Police cite burglary informant for the crime

Posted on September 12, 2011 |

BRISTOL — An Addison County man who originally offered police information on a break-in at a Bristol convenience store eventually was implicated in the crime when police found images of a suspect who looked remarkably like the man on a store surveillance video.

On Aug. 26, at a hair past midnight, Bristol Police Officer Randy Crowe responded to the alarm at the Champlain Farms convenience store on West Street in Bristol. Crowe found the new glass door — installed two days earlier — smashed.
