Vergennes residents offered chance to help plan city's future

VERGENNES — Vergennes-area residents will have a rare chance to help shape their community’s future on Tuesday, when the Vermont Council on Rural Development will host a dinner at St. Peter’s Church and nine workshops at the Bixby Library and Vergennes Opera House.

Among those who will be on hand to help with the planning will be at least 30 federal, state, business and nonprofit leaders, including the top officials in several Vermont state agencies.

Shoreham considers solar power co-op

SHOREHAM — A Shoreham couple is trying to organize a local “community-owned solar cooperative” through which residents could become investors. The payoff for investors, they say, would be net-metering credits applied against their monthly electric utility bills.

Lesbian couple in Addison says the town discriminated

ADDISON — Two women have filed a lawsuit alleging the town of Addison and the selectboard chairman unfairly discriminated against them because they are lesbians.

Attorney David Bond filed the suit on March 5 on behalf of Barbara Supeno and Barbara Ernst in Addison Superior Court, though the court could not provide the documents to the public early this week because the town of Addison had not been served paperwork on the suit.

Reporter, Cornwall native dies in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Matthew Power, a Cornwall native who went on to become a highly respected and well-regarded outdoors writer, died of an apparent heatstroke in a Ugandan jungle while on assignment for the magazine Men’s Journal.

Lake Dunmore ice-out raffle tickets still available

New Haven library talk to focus on historic Vermont inventions

NEW HAVEN — Paul Wood of Walden will give an illustrated lecture, titled “Inventive Vermonters,” at the New Haven Community Library on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. He will talk about Vermont innovations of days gone by, such as an improved butter churn that was patented in Brattleboro and a gravity separator for separating cream from milk that was designed in Waterbury.

“An Evening with Madeleine Kunin and Pat Musick” will feature former Vermont governor, author and feminist Madeleine Kunin. Kunin will give a lecture titled, “The Unfinished Work of the Women’s Movement,” and celebrate the unveiling of a painted portrait by Vermont artist TJ Cunningham.

Lawmakers lament school tax hikes

MIDDLEBURY — While the Vermont Legislature did not convene last week, lawmakers received a homework assignment doled out by area voters on Town Meeting Day: Do something about rising education property taxes.

Vermont residents voted down 35 of approximately 250 school budgets that were on communities’ town meeting dockets on March 3 and 4 — the largest number of failed spending plans since the advent of Act 68 in 2005, according to Rep. David Sharpe, D-Bristol.

Vergennes Union High School board seeks to draft new budget

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Monday began the process of drafting a new budget for the school after voters in the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns rejected the original spending plan on Town Meeting Day.

Comments by VUHS board members and ANwSU officials there and afterward showed some differences on how much and even whether to cut the budget, including the need for staff reductions.
