Remnants of burned covered bridge are cleared

Posted on November 28, 2016 |
By John Flowers

BurnedBridge9365.jpg

CORNWALL — Workers have until Dec. 9 to remove the charred remnants of the former Swamp Road covered bridge, in anticipation of the Vermont Agency of Transportation installing a temporary span to restore traffic between Salisbury and Cornwall before Jan. 1, 2017.

That update was provided on Nov. 23 by Cornwall Selectman Brian Kemp and Salisbury Selectman Paul Vaczy, the local liaisons to VTrans in the aftermath of the Sept. 10 fire that destroyed the historic covered bridge spanning the Otter Creek on Swamp Road.

It's time for winter flu shots

Posted on November 28, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

BURLINGTON — When 2-year-old Eleanor Wallace-Brodeur was diagnosed with leukemia and started chemotherapy, one of the first things her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins had to do before they could see her was to get the flu vaccine.

“Getting vaccinated against the flu not only helps keep you from getting sick,” said Health Commissioner Harry Chen, “it also protects individuals who are vulnerable to serious, and even deadly complications from the flu.”

KILLINGTON — In the last few minutes of the Audi FIS World Cup in Killington this past weekend there were six new leaders. As each of the top eight women flashed down Preston’s Pitch, the last steep pitch on the Superstar trail, the times got faster and faster. Racers were coming down in rapid succession, punching past the 40-odd gates, on average, every 1.2 seconds. At the bottom, a new leader appeared on the scoreboard almost every minute.

MIDDLEBURY— Three years ago, Bridget Gosselin’s professional and personal lives were facing shakeups of major proportions.

She was pregnant with her daughter, Vivienne, and anticipating the challenges of being a single mom. And while she was entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave under Vermont law, her Burlington employer was not among the few in the Green Mountain State that offer benefits to bridge the costs of the first few months of being out of work to care for a new baby.

Grandma’s Thanksgiving carrots, a.k.a carrots with orange and almonds

(Serves 8)

My grandma, Joanne Goldman, has placed these glazed carrots on our Thanksgiving table since before I was born. They’re sticky, fragrant and, accidentally, both vegan and gluten-free. The dish’s accessibility to a scope of dietary restrictions perfectly highlights my grandma’s overall goal: feed as many people as possible.

(For a nut-free version, skip the almonds altogether — the carrots are delicious without them.)

Orwell to field school unification vote for a third time

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By John Flowers

ORWELL — Orwell residents next March will be asked for a third time to merge their school governance with that of five nearby Rutland County towns to form a new Slate Valley Unified Union School District.

Voters in Orwell have already rejected such a move twice this year.

Wile turkeys.jpg

VERMONT — One of our native wildlife species historically played an important role on Thanksgiving Day. North America’s native wild turkeys were the ancestors of the Thanksgiving turkey on our dinner table.

Originally found only in the wild, turkeys now exist as meat-producing domesticated derivatives — the broad breasted white, broad breasted bronze, white Holland, bourbon red and a host of other breeds — all of them descended from our native wild turkey.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard at its Nov. 15 meeting was supportive of a proposed series of concerts and markets to be held in the upper story of the town’s office building and community center.

Resident Katherine Yarbrough approached the board with a suggestion for three “Grange Markets” a year — a spring Artisans’ Market, fall Antique Market and a winter Christmas Market — that would fund an ongoing “Grange Series” of arts events, including music, dances, films, readings, lectures and other performances.
