Film puts spotlight on Vermont prescription drug problem

ADDISON COUNTY — The screening in Addison County next week of a new documentary about prescription drug addiction in Vermont will shine a light on a growing problem that many would just as soon not see.

“Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in Vermont — the governor said so,” said Bess O’Brien, who produced the new documentary “The Hungry Heart.” “I want to create a level of consciousness of the issue, to get the community engaged.”

Iconic church eyes $2.6m in upgrades

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury a few years ago celebrated the 200th birthday of their picturesque place of worship at the top of Main Street. The flock is now seeking to prepare the church for its next 200 years with a $2.6 million capital improvement plan that includes repairing the front steps, upgrading the kitchen and placing a classroom addition onto the north side of the majestic building.

Beloved lunch lady hangs up her spatula

STARKSBORO — In 1965, Lyndon Johnson was president, Apollo 11 had yet to land on the moon, a first-class stamp cost a nickel and a gallon of gas 31 cents.

It was also the year Joyce Shepard started working as a cook at Starksboro’s Robinson Elementary School. She retired in this past summer, after 48 years.

“I just liked working with the kids,” Shepard said. “It kept me young.”

Principal Patrick Hartnett likened Shepard’s tenure to that of a baseball Hall of Famer.

Brandon under presssure to locate new town office space

BRANDON — Two years, two months and numerous mistakes have landed the town of Brandon back to square one without office space and now, a deadline to find some, fast.

The long-overdue renovation of the town offices on Center Street ground to a halt last week after the Vermont League of Cities and Towns settled the town’s claim on the building at a much lower payout than anticipated.

Vergennes City Council expected to accept pipeline petition this week

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials and a resident who is petitioning against the city council’s support of the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline extension last week again mutually agreed to delay accepting his petition.

That delay is intended to make sure voting on the petition can occur on the same day as a planned Vergennes Union High School bond vote.

The annual business symposium, which is produced by Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) and Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN) and features entrepreneur pitches and expert feedback on specific growth challenges, begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Middlebury American Legion.

Rifle hunters reminded of late start to season

VERMONT — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is reminding deer hunters that Vermont’s youth, rifle and muzzleloader seasons fall on relatively late dates this year. Youth weekend is Nov. 9-10 and rifle season begins on Nov. 16. Both seasons are beginning one weekend later than normal. Muzzleloader season begins on Dec. 7.

New farm bill has glimmer of hope

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A cohort of legislators met in the capitol Wednesday in an attempt to find common ground on a new farm bill. But they made no real progress toward resolving differences between the U.S. Senate and House over legislation that covers a range of programs that affect dairy farmers, those who get food assistance and other Vermonters.
