Brandon hires new economic development director

BRANDON — It’s taken years, but the town of Brandon has finally hired an economic development director.

Town Manager Keith Arlund confirmed last week that Stephen Beck of Leicester has accepted the position.

Midd. starts town plan rewrite effort

Ralston tapped for Middlebury race

MIDDLEBURY — Paul Ralston’s first political campaign proved a whirlwind affair — a mere 48 hours. But his compressed effort concluded in successful and thrilling fashion on Tuesday evening when the Middlebury Town Democratic Committee voted 6-5 to select Ralston as Rep. Steve Maier’s replacement on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

Maple Meadow sees increased demand for locally raised eggs

ADDISON COUNTY— Throughout the country, consumers have become more cautious in the wake of a salmonella outbreak that sickened some 1,000 people and affected upwards of half a billion eggs from two Iowa producers.

The larger chicken farms in the United States can expect lasting repercussions and tightened safety standards, but the recall may have unexpected benefits for local egg producers. Jackie Devoid, who with her husband, George, owns Maple Meadow Farm in Salisbury, said that there’s been an increased interest in her family’s eggs since the recall.

Leaders team up at local school

MIDDLEBURY — The start of classes this week at Mary Hogan Elementary signaled the beginning of a new leadership structure at the Middlebury school.

Longtime Principal Bonnie Bourne and Associate Principal Tom Buzzell are now listed as co-principals. The move, according to ID-4 School Board Chairwoman Lucy Schumer, is intended to better reflect the shared responsibilities at the school.

Rep. Maier withdraws from House race

MIDDLEBURY — The Aug. 24 primary provided a lot of fireworks, but Addison County saw arguably its biggest political bombshell detonate two days after the election.

Rep. Steve Maier, D-Middlebury, officially withdrew from the Nov. 2 general election ballot on Thursday, thereby giving the Middlebury Democratic Committee seven days in which to pick someone to run in his stead.

Courthouse business might shrink to one floor

MIDDLEBURY — People visiting the Frank Mahady Courthouse in Middlebury will soon notice some subtle changes in how Addison County’s court system is organized and conducts business.

And eventually, people will notice some big changes — including the ability to file their complaints electronically and potentially see court offices consolidated within a single floor of the 40,000-square-foot courthouse building.

Starksboro campers 'horse' around

STARKSBORO — Last Thursday afternoon, children climbed hay bales at the back of the airy, open barn at Sentinel Farms, nestled in the Starksboro hills.

Kerry Kurt hurried from the barn past a nearby bright red sign reading, “Horse n Rebel Market, Gallery and Grille” and into her new store to check on a couple of customers. She waved to each car that passed on Route 116, and greeted her customers by name.
