FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh artists Denis and Judith Rey Versweyveld have shared a home for 48 years, and a passion for art for even longer.

But until two years ago, they had never directly collaborated on their art. Now, their latest show of their joint work — called “Shelter:Dwelling:House:Home,” sculptures of homes by Denis painted on by Judith, plus Judith’s paintings of homes — is on display in the Vermont Arts Council’s Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier through Oct. 29.

VERGENNES — This weekend, the Vergennes Opera House will host a lively program titled “Dance Mix.”

Don’t expect this dance music to have any thumping hip hop beats or Latin rhythms. Instead, the Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra’s set list will feature upbeat selections from the likes of Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Benjamin Britten.

BRANDON — Last Thursday, Vermont education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca sat in a camp chair on the floor of a canvas tent behind Otter Valley Union High School, listening with rapt attention to a debate about dams and hydro power.

The four students at the front of the tent, as well as the five others watching, attend the Moosalamoo Center for the first part of every school day as part of an experiential environmental education program run through the Brandon high school.

Middlebury firefighters request help in assessing station needs

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury firefighters want to hire a consultant to help determine if the department’s current two firehouses can be preserved and improved, or whether it would make better financial sense to build a new, more centrally located station.

“We are at point where we feel we need to have a feasibility study,” Middlebury Fire Chief Rick Cole told selectboard members on Tuesday.

“This is strictly the first step.”

New poll by Vt. business group presents a different perspective

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By Angelo Lynn

MIDDLEBURY — Contrary to what several statewide conservative politicians are saying, many businesses in the state think Vermont is a good place to operate, that taxes are not the biggest obstacle to growth, that reforming health care and providing for good workforce training and education should be top priorities for the state, and that health care should be publicly funded.

Abuse victims wear pain on their sleeves

MIDDLEBURY — They are basic words transposed on simple cotton T-shirts, but they are strung together in such a fashion as to form powerful messages that can’t be ignored.

“One year later, I still cringe when people touch me. I always thought I was one of the people who would never be raped, until it happened.”

“‘Home sweet home’ may not always be sunshine and lollipops.”

“End the silence, stop the violence.”

“You took so much from me, but you couldn’t take my sparkle.”

MIDDLEBURY — A Mormon student at Middlebury College can feel almost as out of place as a 20-year-old Hasidic Jew running the illicit drug ecstasy from Amsterdam to New York.

Almost.

Award-winning screenwriter Antonio Macia, who graduated from Middlebury in 2000, is well acquainted with the feeling of isolation that goes hand-in-hand with both scenarios.

ANwSU board ratifies two-year teacher contract

Posted on September 27, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

VERGENNES — Teachers in the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union are once again working under a contract, after the ANwSU board of directors last week ratified a new, two-year agreement.

The new contract — which covers the period from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2012 — holds the base teacher salary steady throughout the union, and stipulates no change in the percentage of health care coverage teachers pay. It does, however, uphold already budgeted stepped increases in salary, which will provide scheduled raises to teachers with higher education levels or longer tenures.
