Team of doctors returns from abroad

MIDDLEBURY — Flying into Port-au-Prince’s single runway airport nine days after an earthquake devastated Haiti, Dr. Jean Andersson-Swayze looked down at the dark swath of land uninterrupted by lights. For a city of more than 2 million residents, Andersson-Swayze thought, Port-au-Prince looked awfully dark from the sky.

Hancock, Granville reflect after schools close doors

Posted on February 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

HANCOCK/GRANVILLE — These days, the tiny villages of Hancock and Granville are ghost towns.

At least, that’s what they’re deemed in educational parlance. When the two towns last year decided to shut down their joint Village School, they joined a growing number of small towns in Vermont that have decided to close their schools and tuition their students to schools beyond the towns’ borders.

Shared septic could serve Addison buildings

Posted on February 4, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — On Monday at Addison Central School members of the Addison’s town hall committee and selectboard and a few residents heard that building a shared septic system to serve all town-owned buildings at the intersections of Routes 17 and 22A could probably be done.

But at a price: That system — which could resolve ownership of and allow renovation of Addison’s historic town hall — might cost up to $500,000, said Jon Ashley of Phelps Engineering Inc. of Middlebury.

MIDDLEBURY — Administrators, staff and residents at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center are embarking on a months-long effort to overhaul the atmosphere at the nursing home, striving to make the facility less like a hospital and more like a residential care home.

Administrators at Helen Porter hope that the “culture change,” as they’ve termed the effort, will make the nursing home more comfortable for residents, and also bolster the facility financially.

Bray, 54, said he is running primarily to give farm issues a more prominent forum in Montpelier. Bray, a two-term incumbent legislator representing the Addison-5 district on the House Agriculture Committee, is excited about the new challenge he has decided to take on.

Changes to Current Use proposed

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Budget woes could spell major changes for the state’s Use Value Appraisal Program, better known as “Current Use,” which is credited with preserving millions of acres of Vermont forestland and farmland from development.

Right now, the 32-year-old program is facing a one-year moratorium on new enrollments, higher penalties for landowners who withdraw land from Current Use to be developed, and a new property transfer tax that would be more in line with the rates applied to other property sales in the state.

ID-4 directors propose budget increase of 1/52%

Posted on February 1, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on April 14 will consider a proposed Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $5,771,990, representing a 1.52-percent increase in spending compared to this year.

The budget reflects no new programs, nor additional teaching staff. It actually represents a decrease of $87 in spending per pupil (from $13,539 to $13,452). That’s in large part because the school anticipates welcoming eight additional students next year, for a potential total of 395, according to Mary Hogan Elementary School Associate Principal Tom Buzzell.

BRANDON — A snapshot can tell a short story, but a photo album can weave a longer, more enriching tale.

That is the philosophy behind the Otter Valley Union High School Moosalamoo Center’s concept of narrative report cards versus traditional letter or number grades.

BRIDPORT — Three weeks ago, Gedeleine Franklin was bundled out of the orphanage she knew as home after a slip in an underwater fault plunged Haiti into chaos.

Ten days ago, the two-year-old little girl was hustled onto an airplane with 80 other children bound for Miami. Aid workers, airline employees and orphanage volunteers cradled the children as they made the halting, unfamiliar trek out of Haiti.
