MIDDLEBURY —  Prior to Nov. 8, some Middlebury residents had raised concerns about how voters would adjust to the new polling place at the town’s recreation facility at 151 Creek Road.

With the General Election now squarely in the rearview mirror, town officials said they have received mostly positive reviews from local voters, who for the first time in many years — perhaps ever — cast ballots in a venue outside of the core village area.

In aftermath of election, women are 'sad but strong'

Posted on November 17, 2016 |
By Emma Cotton

MIDDLEBURY — Sitting in Middlebury’s Sama’s Cafe on Monday morning, Sujata Moorti sighed deeply.

The Middlebury College professor of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies had been processing the results of last week’s election. Like many people around her, she believes President-elect Donald J. Trump will encourage the “rolling back” of important policies — ones that promote the well-being of women, members of the LGBTQ community, people of color and marginalized religious groups, among others.

ADDISON COUNTY — The 2016 deer rifle season in Addison County began with easily the most productive opening weekend since 2005, when the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife banned shooting two-point “spikehorn” bucks during Vermont’s 16-day November rifle season.

The county’s weigh stations handled 249 deer, 49 more than the previous best opening weekend total, 200 in 2013, since the 2005 rule change.

The next best opening weekend totals since then came in 2010 (192) and in 2015 (188).

Rally against hate in Midd_1003.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — This past Sunday afternoon, Nov. 13, more than 130 Addison County residents gathered at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society on Duane Court in Middlebury for a “Rally Against Hate.”

A rowdy parade of citizens, ranging in age from babies in strollers to a very determined 87-year-old, then walked from the church to the Middlebury green by way of Court Street. Supportive motorists honked and waved at signs that said, “We Love Immigrants,” “Black Lives Matter,” and “Speak Out Against Racism.”

HSESS Group of Three 12x16 OL $720 CMYK.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Hannah Sessions’ Blue Ledge Farm cheese is a staple of the local, artisanal food of Addison County. As an artist, she is a keystone of Edgewater Gallery. Since Edgewater opened in 2009 her intimate, animated portrayals of the goats, chickens, cows and pigs she works with every day, as well as the fresh, illumined landscapes of the fields they roam, have made her a favorite for visitors, and staff as well.

Meet the Chef: Kathy Walls from Vermont Soup Co.

Posted on November 17, 2016 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

KWalls6241.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Some think of Kathleen (or Kathy) Walls as Souper-Woman. (Common that pun is too good to pass up!) Walls is the owner and soup-maker for The Vermont Soup Company — a company she founded not quite two years ago — but that is only half her identity. When her 10-gallon pot, veggie peeler, chopping block and cape — er, rather, apron — are stuffed neatly into her kitchen cupboards, Walls works as a bankruptcy lawyer.
