Vergennes Police Log: Speeding alerts police to a few serious incidents

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on June 23 cited a Shelburne man for drunken driving, second offense, after they alleged his blood-alcohol content tested at three times the legal limit.

Cited was Stephen Moreau, 57, after Vergennes police stopped his vehicle on Panton Road in Panton after noticing its inspection sticker had expired in 2010.

Police said as well as smelling alcohol on Moreau that they saw empty beer cans in his vehicle before testing his BAC, which they said registered at 0.247 percent. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other incidents between June 18 and 24:

•  On June 18 checked the welfare of a child at a New Haven Road home at the request of one of his parents; the child was OK.

•  On June 18 stopped a car for speeding on West Main Street and ended up turning over both occupants to the U.S. Border Patrol.

•  On June 19 calmed a disruptive summer school student at Vergennes Union High School.

•  On June 19 told the owners of a Booth Woods home going through foreclosure that the padlocks on its door were a civil issue.

•  On June 20 dealt with several incidents of vandalism to flower beds, in a South Maple Street yard, on a South Water Street porch, in a Maple Manor yard, and on a Main Street porch. On South Maple Street a trampoline had also been tossed partially onto the street.

•  On June 20 helped Burlington police by talking to two city residents about an incident that followed a near-accident in Burlington.

•  On June 20 notified a Hillside Drive resident his daughter had been hospitalized following a car accident.

•  On June 20 were told a Hillside Drive resident was refusing to cooperate with a court-ordered custody agreement, and referred the case to Vermont State Police when they learned the man had moved to Starksboro.

•  On June 20 looked around MacDonough Drive for a raccoon reported to be acting strangely.

•  On June 20 warned two girls to stop harassing a third, who had come into the station to complain about a problem that had lasted two weeks and included an incident at the city pool.

•  On June 20 were alerted that a 10-year-old boy was at a city business doorstep saying he had just been in a fight. Police learned he had been fighting a seven-year-old boy and drove him home, where his mother said she would deal with it. Police later learned the two fought again at the city pool, and drove both boys home and spoke to their parents after confiscating a pocket knife from one of them.

•  On June 21 spoke to a man with a criminal record they stopped near a Green Mountain Power building that has been repeatedly burglarized; police told him to stay away from the area. 

•  On June 21 along with Department of Children and Families personnel began an investigation of an alleged sexual assault on a minor at a Hillside Drive apartment.

•  On June 22 dealt with an ongoing issue of alleged harassment of a New Haven Road woman by another woman.

•  On June 22 checked a report of a suspicious man on Walker Avenue and found no problem.

•  On June 23 spoke to two boys involved in a fight at the Youth Fishing Derby at the Otter Creek basin. Police disqualified the two from participating in the event and said they would issue a no-trespass order if there was any further trouble.

•  On June 24 helped VSP break up an underage drinking party on Blue Heron Lane in Ferrisburgh; city police said VSP issued court diversion paperwork to most of the roughly 30 youths there.

•  On June 24 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at a medical call at a city church.

•  On June 24 accepted a small vinyl pouch found by man in the city park and began trying to reach its owner.

•  On June 24 were told a bicycle had been stolen from a Main Street residence.

•  On June 24 responded to a verbal fight between a couple at a First Street residence.
