VUHS bond proposals fail

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday resoundingly rejected a combined total of $6.2 million in bonding designed to improve the Vergennes Union High School building and athletic fields.

Residents in the ANwSU-member communities of Vergennes, Ferrisburgh, Addison, Waltham and Panton voted 820-671 against a $4.2-million bond that would have funded major improvements to the VUHS auditorium, kitchen and cafeteria; new roofing in several areas where school officials said it is badly needed; repaving of one parking lot; one new sidewalk and repair of another; traffic flow improvements in the pick-up and drop-off area; and new bleachers in the middle school gym.

Voters also rejected a second bond, for $2 million, which would have paid for an artificial surface to the school’s varsity soccer/lacrosse field and a six-lane track to surround it. That bond went down by a 1,107-376 tally and could not have been approved separately from the larger bond.
