MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a report of a shooting incident in the Jackson Lane neighborhood in the early morning of April 20.

As reported on addisonindependent.com and in the Monday edition of the Independent, Bernard Kimball, 65, had been shot in the leg by a suspect outside of his apartment at around 1 a.m. that Saturday. Police said the victim was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care for surgery and follow up treatment of his injuries and was listed in fair condition on Sunday evening.

The shooter is described as a young man age 17 to 19 years old, around six feet tall, with a thin-to-average build and a goatee. The shooter was wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored vest. He was accompanied by two other people for whom authorities have no descriptions, according to police.

The group ran south on Jackson Lane after the incident, police said. Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Middlebury police at 388-3191, or contact Det. Kris Bowdish at kbowdish@middleburypolice.org.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted Vermont State Police in helping a person who had taken a drug overdose on April 15.

•  Referred to counseling an emotionally distraught person on April 15.

•  Responded to a report that someone had driven away from the Middlebury Short Stop on Court Street on April 15 without paying for gasoline.

•  Assisted a Cross Street resident who was having mental health issues on April 15.

•  Arrested Shane M. Branchaud, 30, of St. Albans on an outstanding warrant and took him to Addison Superior Court on April 15.

•  Investigated a stalking complaint on April 16.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Washington Street residence on April 16.

•  Investigated a vandalism complaint at a Case Street residence on April 16.

•  Cited a juvenile female for petit larceny for allegedly stealing some items from the Middlebury Union High School girls’ locker room on April 16.

•  Received a report of an alleged assault at a Rogers Road residence on April 16. Police said the male victim declined to provide a statement.

•  Contacted a person who had been dumping trash in the Cobble Road area on April 17. Police said the culprit will pick up the trash.

•  Executed a search warrant at an Ossie Road home on April 17. Police said they found and confiscated a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The investigation is ongoing, according to police.

•  Served a no-trespass order on April 17 on a person who was not wanted at an Elm Street residence. An officer assisted in removing the person from the residence, according to police.

•  Responded to a domestic disturbance at an Airport Road home on April 17.

•  Were informed that some juveniles had jumped on the Mister Up’s Restaurant company van and damaged it while it was parked off Bakery Lane on April 19. Police are investigating the incident.

•  Assisted a local person who had threatened to commit suicide on April 19.

•  Assisted Vermont State Police in responding to a crime report in Cornwall on April 20.

•  Cited Michael D. Cordoba, 21, of Cornwall for driving under the influence, following a traffic stop on College Street on April 20. Police said a passenger in the vehicle was issued court diversion paperwork for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

•  Responded to a noise complaint near the railroad tracks off Woodbridge Lane on April 21.

•  Investigated a domestic disturbance at a Seminary Street residence on April 21.

•  Responded to a report of two women yelling at each other in the McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot on April 21. Police said the two were arguing over a traffic issue.

•  Investigated a report of some youths trying to jump on a train behind the Middlebury Beverage Center off Macintyre Lane on April 21. Police said the group of Middlebury College students was warned not to trespass on railroad property.

•  Assisted as Middlebury College Public Safety shut down a loud party at a Middlebury College student house on South Main Street on April 21.

•  Ticketed a Brandon man for violating the town’s ordinance against public urination, in the College Street area on April 21.

•  Were informed of the theft of a wallet from a vehicle parked at McDonald’s Restaurant on April 22. Police have a suspect and the investigation continues.

•  Assisted a Vermont State Police trooper in the consent search of a vehicle in Salisbury on April 22.
