ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police late last week announced that they had cited a 30-year-old Brandon woman for a felony count of financial exploitation after troopers had completed a four-week investigation into an incident that occurred at a private home in Addison.

Trooper Andrew Leise reported that Ashlie L. Bourn, 30, of Brandon provided caregiving services to an 84-year-old Addison man for approximately five months. During that time frame Bourn allegedly accessed the man’s credit card and checkbook to make purchases for herself. Police claim that Bourn took more than $2,500 from the man.

While working for him Bourn allegedly purchased various items, including exercise equipment, clothing, cigarettes, gasoline and food.

Police referred the case to Adult Protective Services, which is also looking into the matter.

Bourn is due to answer the charge in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, on Dec. 30.

Vermont State Police are encouraging senior citizens and their families to conduct proper checks on private caregivers whom they hire independently.

In other recent activity, troopers:

•  On Nov. 19 at 11:20 p.m. stopped an automobile driven by Michael Grace, 57, of Groveport, Ohio, on Route 116 in Bristol for a motor vehicle violation and subsequently cited Grace for driving under the influence.

•  On Nov. 20 at 10:42 a.m. were alerted to a case of possible petit larceny in Cornwall. Police said someone entered an unsecured barn and stole two orange Echo chainsaws — one had a 16-inch bar and the other an 18-inch bar. Both were described as “like new.” The total estimated value for both chainsaws is $900. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact VSP at 802-388-4919. Information can also be submitted anonymously online at www.vtips.info or by texting “CRIMES” (274637) to keyword: VTIPS.

•  On Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. responded to a reported family fight at a Route 116 home in Bristol. After police determined there was no physical altercation at the residence, they found Mark Currier, 26, of Bristol hiding under a bed and they arrested him on two outstanding arrest warrants and one order to serve time.

•  On Nov. 20 cited a 17-year-old Ferrisburgh male for enabling consumption of alcohol by minors. The charge came from an investigation into an Oct. 31 underage drinking party at a Ferrisburgh home that VSP and Vergennes police had busted up.

•  On Nov. 21 announced that, after a lengthy investigation, they had cited Tausha Stalcup, 40, of Monkton for careless and negligent driving related to a one-car accident that occurred on Bristol Road in Monkton earlier this month. The trooper’s investigation suggests that Stalcup fell asleep at the wheel of the 2013 Chevy Cruze she was driving on Nov. 4 at 1:42 a.m. The car apparently drifted off the roadway, launching the driver and the car up into trees at the bottom of Meader Hill.

The trooper reported that Stalcup was belted improperly and was projected forward upon impact. She sustained moderate injuries — multiple strained muscles, and a contusion to the forehead — and was transported to Porter Hospital after she was cut from the vehicle. State police praised the quick response and assistance provided by the Bristol Rescue Squad and Monkton Fire Department at the crash.

•  On Nov. 21 at 9:08 a.m. responded to a two-car crash on Route 30 at Route 74 in Cornwall village. Police report that Jill C. Thomas, 49, of Shoreham was in the process of pulling onto Route 30 from Route 74 to travel north when, at the same time, Heidi L. Anderson, 30, of Cornwall was driving a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon southbound on Route 30 and had the right of way. Police alleged that Thomas’s 2007 Honda Pilot encroached upon the right of way of Anderson’s Hyundai, and that Anderson subsequently lost control of her vehicle and traveled off the west side of the road. The Hyundai collided with a fence and tree.

The trooper alleged that Anderson’s speed was a contributing factor in the collision. He issued Thomas a warning for improper left turning, and he issued Anderson a warning for speeding.

The Hyundai sustained moderate front-end damage and Anderson was treated at the scene by the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association for bumps and bruises. VSP was also assisted at the scene by the Cornwall Fire Department.

•  On Nov. 21 began investigating a burglary in Ferrisburgh. Unknown individual(s) forced entry into a private residence located at The Basin Harbor Club and stole numerous coins and pieces of jewelry. The 94-year-old victim estimated the total loss at approximately $5,000. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact VSP.

•  On Nov. 21 at 11:57 p.m. cited Dylan Garside, 23, of Burlington for speeding after he was seen going 30 mph or more over the posted speed limit of 50 mph on Route 22A in Orwell.

•  Are investigating a one-car accident on Route 116 south of Bristol village near River Road on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. The driver left the scene heading south on Route 116 in a white Subaru Outback with temporary Vermont plates. Police believe that the Subaru’s hood and front end sustained damage, with most likely both driver’s and passenger’s side headlights brokes and front quarter panel side damage.

Troopers are requesting assistance from the public in locating the driver. Investigation suggests that the driver was a female in her mid-20s, thin, with natural red hair, approximately 5 feet, 6 inches, tall. Apparently a young child was in the back seat of the vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Kaitlyn Armstrong at the New Haven VSP barracks at 802-388-4919.

•  On Nov. 21 were told that sometime that day between 2 and 8 p.m. a 1995 Ford Windstar minivan was stolen from private property in Leicester. Anyone with information in regard to this theft is asked to contact VSP.

•  On Nov. 21 received a report of the theft of a chainsaw — a red Echo with a 16-inch bar — from a home on Water Street in Weybridge. Anyone with information is asked to contact VSP.

•  On Nov. 22 at around 8 p.m. were at a Cobble Road residence in New Haven conducting an unrelated investigation when Eric Scott Grayum, 33, of Saxtons River left the roadway and drove into the driveway. Police checked the Department of Motor Vehicles records and saw that Grayum apparently had a criminally suspended license. So they cited him for driving with a criminally suspended license.

•  On Nov. 23 at just past midnight responded with Bristol police to a report of erratic driving on Route 116. Bristol police located the vehicle and operator, identified as Arlene Denis, 67, of Bristol. Police cited Denis for driving under the influence of alcohol.
