LINDA BASLOW

MIDDLEBURY — Linda S. Baslow, 66, a lifelong resident of Middlebury, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Porter Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born in Salisbury May 19, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Laurette Whitney.

She was employed as a home healthcare worker and was retired. She was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School. 

Her relatives say she was a very dedicated mother and grandmother, always willing to selflessly help her family and others. She will be greatly missed.

BERTHA COUNTER

RUTLAND — Bertha Mae Counter, 72, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Middlebury on Nov. 23, 1941. She was the daughter of Leonard and Lena (Clark) Dukette. She grew up in Salisbury where she received her early education.

CARLETON DeCOSTER

MONKTON — Carleton Albert DeCoster, 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Monkton on July 28. His family says he was a man of famously few words, informed by great wisdom and a wonderfully dry wit.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, Sept. 19, 1943, he lived the simple yet rich life of an avid outdoorsman, becoming a husband, father and grandfather along the way. He served honorably with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Relatives say he will be missed by the friends and hunting buddies he met with daily at Vermont Field Sports in Middlebury.

CAROLYN HUTTON

SALISBURY/ORWELL — Carolyn Park Hutton, 90, formerly of Orwell, died Monday morning, July 28, 2014, at Shard Villa in Salisbury.

Born Jan. 15, 1924, in West Point, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Ella Pearl (McMickel) Park.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and founder of the Dewees Cochran Foundation Inc. in Vermont in 1980. Her family says she enjoyed flower gardening and her pets.

She was a legal secretary and had also been a real estate agent.

PAULINE KNOWLTON

VERGENNES — Pauline Anne Knowlton, 76, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at her home in Vergennes.

She was born in Newton, Mass., on July 19, 1938. She was the daughter of Malcolm and Marjorie (Bosworth) Stewart. She grew up in Wellesley Hills, Mass., where she received her early education. She graduated from Wellesley High School, class of 1956.

FRANCES MCDERMOTT

BRISTOL — Frances Mary McDermott, 94, of Bristol, Vt., peacefully passed from this world and joined her Lord on Sunday morning, the 27thof July at 7:20 a.m. at the Mid-Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. Frances was born in Bristol on July 30, 1919, to Ira and Dora Ward White, the youngest of 7 children.

ROLAND “GUS” NAGY

MIDDLEBURY — Roland “Gus” Nagy of Middlebury, formerly of Clifton, N.J., Caldwell, N.J., and Williamstown, Mass., passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2014, after a long illness.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Catherine (Van Vooren); daughters Adrianne DaPonte (Paul), Madeline Nagy (Donald Gilrein) and Gwendolyn Nagy-Benson (Andrew); grandchildren Ella, Mary, and Rachael Nagy-Benson, Simeon and Seraphina DaPonte; and many nieces and nephews.

WEYBRIDGE — Linda Jean Busier, 72, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at her home in Weybridge.

She was born in Port Henry, N.Y., on June 11, 1942. She was the daughter of Sherman and Marjorie (Glover) Childs. She grew up in Port Henry where she received her early education.

She was a resident of Weybridge for 48 years. She served the town as the first woman selectman. She was a past member of the Green Mountain Doll Club and the Middlebury Women’s Club, and she belonged to The Red Hat Society in Middlebury.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
