JANET BROWN

BRANDON — Janet Smith Brown, 81, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at her home in Brandon. She was born in Brandon on April 22, 1934.

She is survived by three children, three siblings, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband, Francis “Bud” Brown, predeceased her on March 25, 2009.

The graveside committal service and burial took place on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Old Goshen Community Cemetery.

JOAN CUNNINGHAM

BENSON — Joan Carey Cunningham, 93, of Benson, Vt., died Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at her home with her family present.

Joan was born in Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 22, 1922, daughter of Arthur Graham Carey and Elisabeth Foster Millet.

She attended the University of Minnesota where she studied agriculture. Joan married Michael Cunningham, a graphic artist, from Rochester, N.Y., in 1944. In 1948, Joan and Michael realized a dream and created Trinity Farm where they managed a herd of registered Jersey cows.

MIDDLEBURY — A memorial service for Brett M. Emilo, 44, who passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at his home in Montour Falls, N.Y., will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury. A reception following the burial will take place at the Middlebury Inn from 1-4 p.m. ◊

RUTH MESSENGER

WEYBRIDGE — Ruth Bestor Messenger, 93, passed away on July 20, 2015, in Middlebury, Vt., with her family at her side. She was a spirited loving woman and lived her life fully, fighting until the very end. Her infectious laugh and twinkling eyes will be missed by all who knew her, but most of all by her husband, Herb, her lifelong love, to whom she was married for 71 wonderful years.

NEW HAVEN — Professor George Warfield, of New Haven, Vt., died peacefully at home nine days after celebrating 70years of marriage to the love of his life: Lauraine Serra Warfield. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild had all joined them for the anniversary. He was 96.

PANTON — Marie Counter, 64, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Paquins’ home in Panton.

She was born May 27, 1951, in Burlington, the daughter of Richard and Geneva (Marble) Counter.

She loved purses and her possessions, getting out in the community, eating out, car rides, gifts and cards.

Marie is survived by her brother, Dale Counter of Leicester, and her special aunt, Eleanor Counter of Winooski.

LESTER ANDERSON

LINCOLN — Lester C. Anderson departed from his Wells Farm on Quaker Street in Lincoln, Vermont, in the late evening of July 16, 2015. Monique, his beloved wife and very best friend, departed from there on September 10, 2013.

RALPH BUTLER SR.

MIDDLEBURY — Ralph W. Butler Sr., 88, passed away Friday afternoon, July 17, 2015, at the Residence at Otter Creek.

Born on Good Friday, April 15, 1927, the year of the Great Flood, he was the son of William and Edith (Emerson) Butler.

Ralph attended local schools and then enlisted in the United States Army.

ADDISON — Roger Allen Leonard, born April 16, 1952, died July 18, 2015, at 63 years old.

Roger passed away at the home of his daughter, Caroline Audy, and son-in-law, Josh Audy, in Addison, Vt., after a long illness. He liked to fish, sing, draw, whistle and bowl.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
