GRACE MERKEL

HUBBARDTON — Grace Ann Merkel, 95, of Hubbardton passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at the Mountain View Genesis Elder Center. She was born on Feb. 16, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Peter and Louise (Streb) Rossa.

Mrs. Merkel grew up on Long Island, N.Y., graduating from Mineola High School in 1939.

In 1965, she relocated to Vermont, operating the Merkel Country Store until 1973. She and her husband were the operators of Half Moon State Park and then Bomoseen State Park for 20 years until her retirement.

MERTON TORREY

ADDISON — On Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, Merton Duane Torrey, 94, of Addison, was reunited with his beloved wife Shirley.

He was born on May 14, 1922, the son of Merton and Ella (Wrisley) Torrey. He attended school in Addison and graduated from Vermont Technical College in Randolph.

LILLIAN LENO

RIPTON — Lillian A. Leno, 80, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

Lillian was a telephone operator for many years. She married Winston E. “Wink” Leno in East Middlebury in 1954. Lillian enjoyed gardening, landscaping and visiting with friends.

She is survived by her son, Winston G. “Wink” Leno of Ripton, several nieces and nephews. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Winston E. Leno in December 2010, and by several brothers and sisters.

NELLIE FREEMAN

WAITSFIELD — Nellie Godfrey Freeman, 91, slipped quietly away on Friday evening, Aug. 26, 2016, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. Born on a small farm in West Fairlee on March 15, 1925, she was the third born of seven children of the late Arthur and Florence (Webster) Godfrey. On May 11, 1943, Nellie married Wayland Freeman in Waterbury. Wayland predeceased Nellie in 2001.

NATHAN ZUSES

WHITING — Nathan Zuses, 91, passed away peacefully at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Aug. 23, 2016, with his loving daughter Carol Bogren at his bedside.

Nathan was born Feb. 8, 1925, to Harry and Sonia (Pasternak) Zuses in the Bronx, N.Y. He was the first generation of his family to be born in this country after his parents fled Russia during the pogroms. He was predeceased by his brother Irving, and sisters Pearl and Annette.

BRIAN SAMPSON

LADSON, S.C. — A memorial service for Brian Sampson, 48, of Ladson, S.C., formerly of Bridport, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Bridport Park. If there is inclement weather, the service will be held at the Masonic Hall in Bridport. 

FRANCIS PROVONCHA

BRISTOL — Francis E. Provoncha, 81, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1934, in Monkton, the son of Ernest and Theresa (LaBier) Provoncha.

Francis was a farmer in Monkton for many years. In the early 1970s he started driving trucks for various businesses. He was on the school board and was a lister in the town of Monkton. He moved to Bristol to retire in 1998.

MATTHEW MELENDY

HUNTINGTON — Matthew I. Melendy of Huntington, 57, passed away peacefully at the UVM Medical Center on Aug. 26, 2016, surrounded by his family. Matt was born in Burlington on Easter Sunday, March 29, 1959, the son of Irving and the late Marylin (Wells) Melendy of Jerusalem, Vt.

Matt was a graduate of SBHS class of 1977. He worked in the automotive field as a mechanic, salesman, and F&I manager in and around Chittenden and Addison Counties area his entire life.

BARBARA MASON

LINCOLN — Barbara (Myrtle) Mason, 67, passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born Feb. 17, 1949, in Lincoln, the daughter of George and Etta (Flemings) Martell.

I am going to listen to your heart she said, “You think I have a heart?” I said, (Star) “Mom, we all know you have a huge heart, that’s why you got a kid’s size 2 foot because the lord put so much into your huge heart your feet got the smaller end of the deal!”

LOIS OSGOOD

VERGENNES — Lois V. Osgood, age 96, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, in New Haven at her caregivers’.

She was born April 19, 1920, in New Haven to E. Vernon and Bertha Young. Lois married Donald Osgood in Saint Johnsbury on Oct. 12, 1946. They moved to Vergennes in 1957. Don predeceased her in 1996. She was a homemaker, did daycare and was Gramma to many.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
