BARBARA MARSHALL

BRIDPORT — Barbara H. Marshall, 82, a Bridport resident since 1951, died Friday, March 11, 2016, at Shard Villa in Salisbury.

Born May 2, 1933, in Middletown, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Theodore J. and Mildred (Mitchell) Hartke. Barbara married George W. Marshall on Aug. 18, 1951, and together they operated Deerwood Farm in Bridport, raising registered Holsteins, for many years.

She was of the Episcopalian faith.

FLORENCE 'DOLLY' MOZZER

BRANDON — Florence “Dolly” E. (Keenan) Mozzer, 97, died March 11, 2016, at Wintergreen North Residential Care Home in Brandon.

She was born in Bristol, Conn., on Aug. 17, 1918. Her parents were Andrew Stevenson and Dorothy Dowds. At about 6 months old, her father and her 3-year-old sister died the same day of the flu epidemic. Dolly was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Deborah Dowds and Michael Keenan, as her mother felt she could not care for her and two other children.

ORRIN SUNDERLAND

MIDDLEBURY — Orrin P. Sunderland, age 77, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 10, 2016, in Middlebury.

Orrin was born in Bridport on March 13, 1938, the son of Alanson and Sadie (Clark) Sunderland. He grew up in Bridport and graduated from Middlebury High School in the class of 1957. He married Wanda Boynton in 1962. The couple lived in Bridport for a few years and moved to East Middlebury in 1972.

NANCY HARPER

BURLINGTON, Ontario — Nancy Sholes Harper died March 6, 2016, at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario.

She was born May 10, 1929, in Middlebury, Vt., the daughter of Russell and Faith Sholes, and was a 1946 graduate of Middlebury High School.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin (February 1977), and her son Christopher (July 2015).

JONI MARTELL

ADDISON — Joni E. Martell, 59, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, surrounded by family.

She was born Oct. 31, 1956, in Middlebury, daughter of Howard and Nada Smith. Halloween was always a huge holiday in her household.

GEORGE PHINNEY JR.

RIPTON — George Phinney Jr., husband, father, brother, son, coach, mentor, leader and, most of all, loyal and dedicated friend, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly March 1 at his home in Ripton.

George was born Dec. 17, 1946, in Middlebury to George Phinney Sr. and Adele (Marshall) Phinney. He was a lifelong resident of Addison County, yet his loss will be felt deeply as near as Middlebury and as far as Australia.

ROSEMARY MAYO

OAK HILL, Fla. — Rosemary Diane Mayo, 57, of Oak Hill, Fla., formerly of Lincoln, Vt., passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 22, 2016.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1958, in Winooski.

Rosemary is survived by her son and two daughters, Brian and wife Jess of Milton, Tara and husband Michael Devino of Lincoln, and Savannah of Daytona Beach, Fla. She is further survived by her siblings, Donna Lockerby Phillips of Edgewater, Fla., Jane Duggan of Edgewater, Fla., Carlene Barber of Edgewater, Fla., Rebecca Torre of Milton, Vt., and Thomas Lockerby of Mint Hill, N,C.

FRANCIS WARNER

WALTHAM— Francis A. Warner, 84, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at his home in Waltham.

He was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Addison, the son of Clayton and Stella (Danyow) Warner.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He had a whitewashing business for many years. Also, he was the road commissioner for the town of Waltham for 45 years.

WILLIAM 'JIM' O'CONNOR

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — William James “Jim” O’Connor, 72, a Cape Coral, Fla., resident for the past five and a half years, formerly of Middlebury, Vt., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, in Cape Coral. He was born in Duluth, Minn., to Willis and Emma O’Connor, now deceased.

THOR PETTERSEN

VERGENNES — Thor B. Pettersen, 90, of Vergennes died Friday, Feb. 26,from congestive heart failure.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 20, 1925, to Karen and Thoralf Pettersen. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and flew out of Italy on a B-17 as a nose gunner.

After the war Thor married his high school sweetheart, Mary Belski of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1945 and lived in Brooklyn, Port Washington, and Mattituck, all on Long Island. They were married for 56 years.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
