Paul Steele

MIDDLEBURY — Paul Steele, a mainstay of Steele’s Service Center in downtown Middlebury for four decades, died at Porter Hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 3, following a lengthy illness. He was 65.A more complete obituary, including a planned event celebrating of his life, will appear in Monday’s issue of the Addison Independent.

Milton J. Pratt

CORNWALL — A graveside service for Milton J. Pratt, formerly of Cornwall and a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1949, who died in Traverse City, Mich., on July 1, 2009, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Route 74, Cornwall.

Officiants will be the Rev. Stephen R. Payne, a cousin; and Charlotte Phillips, a classmate.

Robert A. Sargent

MIDDLEBURY — Robert A. Sargent, 67, died July 25, 2011, at his home after a period of failing health.

Born in Middlebury May 28, 1944, he was the son of the late Rudolph M. and Helen (Cook) Sargent.

Bob lived in Middlebury most of his life and was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1962. In high school he was an avid basketball player, and continued to do so as an adult. He loved all sporting events, especially basketball and his favorite baseball team, the Yankees.

Ralph A. “Buddy” Elliott Jr.

MIDDLEBURY — Ralph A. “Buddy” Elliott Jr., 84, of Middlebury died on the morning of Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Middlebury the son of Ralph A. Elliott Sr. and Emily (Birdsall) Elliott. He attended local schools.

Alan Roberts

STARKSBORO — Alan Roberts, 94, of Starksboro died July 25, 2011.

Born in 1917, in Ashburnham, Mass., a small town where his father had first position as the local minister, he and his twin brother faced a world involved in World War I. Shortly after that war his family moved to Proctor, where during his elementary school years a love of Vermont was kindled in all the family.

Bonita Kay “Bonnie” Gale

BRANDON — Bonita Kay “Bonnie” Gale, 66, of Brandon died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

She was born in Rutland on Dec. 14, 1944. She was the daughter of Bernard C. and Kathryn (Scarborough) Gale. She grew up in Salisbury. She graduated from Middlebury Union High School, class of 1963.

Allyn Albert Griffin

BRANDON — Allyn Albert Griffin, 69, of Brandon died July 22, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Sudbury on Nov. 8, 1941. He was the son of Benoni and Vivian (Dodge) Griffin Sr. He received his early education in local Sudbury schools and graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1960.

Nicholas P. Liberio

NEW HAVEN — Nicholas P. Liberio, 60, passed away, Monday, July 25, 2011.

Born June 23, 1951, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna (D’Elia) Liberio. Nicholas was a graduate of Cranford High School, Cranford, N.J., class of 1969, and Lincoln Technical Institute.

He was the owner of Liberty Construction and was the builder of over 20 quality homes in Addison County. His life was dedicated to and lived for his daughter, Melissa, and her well-being.

James W. Murray

EAST MIDDLEBURY — James W. Murray, 82, died early Friday morning, July 22, 2011, at his home in East Middlebury.

He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Middlebury, the son of Kenneth and Rena (Whittemore) Murray. He was a graduate of Middlebury High School. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Air Force.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
