Noah Lathrop

WILLISTON — Noah William “Papa” Lathrop died in peace at Fletcher Allen Health Care on April 15, 2010, after a short and fearless fight against multiple medical challenges.

If friends desire, gifts in his memory may be made to www.runtohomebase.org (or by mail to the Red Sox Foundation, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02115), a cause merging two of his greatest joys: service to America’s veterans in need and baseball, especially Red Sox baseball.

Katharine McGlynn

MIDDLEBURY — Katharine Ann McGlynn of Middlebury died Sunday, April 18, after a long and courageous battle with rheumatoid arthritis and more recently with Alzheimer’s disease.

At her request there will be no service. Those wishing to make a donation in her name may do so to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree St. Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30309, or to the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, 153 Main St., Burlington, VT 05401.

She was born May 16, 1930, in New York City and spent her childhood in New Jersey.

Gertrude Needham

VERGENNES/MIDDLEBURY — Mrs. Gertrude Needham, 91, died early Saturday morning April 17, 2010, at Ringer’s Home Care in Vergennes.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home located at 117 South Main St., Middlebury. The Rev. Steven Jewett, pastor of the Memorial Baptist Church, will officiate. Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will follow in Middlebury Cemetery.

Marion Spencer

ADDISON — Surrounded by loving family, Marion Wood Spencer, 94, died peacefully on Friday, April 16, 2010, at her home in Addison where she lived for the past 70 years.

Calling hours will be held at the family home on Thursday, April 22, from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be at the Vergennes Congregational Church on Friday, April 23, at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Addison Historical Society, c/o Evelyn Chapman, 240 Cedar Drive, Addison, VT 05491.

Laurette Whitney

BRANDON — Laurette Elizabeth Whitney, 92, of Brandon, died Saturday afternoon, April 17, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Funeral services were held at the East Middlebury Methodist Church Wednesday, April 21. The Rev. Jill Robinson officiated. Burial followed in Holman Cemetery in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salisbury Historical Society, PO Box 40, Salisbury, VT 05769.

She was born July 3, 1917, on Morgan Road in Salisbury.

Luella Wolfreys

DORCHESTER, Mass./MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Luella Adele (Foster) Wolfreys, 88, died at her home in Dorchester, Mass., Thursday, April 8, 2010.

Services were held at Dolan’s Funeral Home in Dorchester, Mass. Interment was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

She was born in Middlebury on Aug. 1, 1921. She was the daughter of Theodore and Nina (Chaffee) Foster and the wife of the late William F. Wolfreys.

John Drake

BENSON — John A. “Jack” Drake Jr., 63, died Tuesday evening, April 13, 2010, at his home in Benson surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

A fraternal service was held on Saturday, April 17, at the Bridport Masonic Hall. Burial followed in Weybridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local Masonic lodge or Shriners Hospital

He was born Aug. 8, 1946, in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of the late John A. and Norma (Crowther) Drake Sr.

Lucy Gardner

MIDDLEBURY — Lucy Anne (Case) Gardner, 76, died at the Helen Porter Nursing Home on Sunday, April 11, 2010, after a prolonged illness.

There will be a “Celebration of Lucy’s Life” service at the Counseling Service of Addison County Friday, May 14, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Counseling Service of Addison County, c/o Robert Thorn, 89 Main St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

ADDISON — On Friday, April 16, Marion Wood Spencer died peacefully in her home in Addison where she lived for 70 years. She was surrounded by loving family. Calling hours will be at her home at 3640 Route 22A in Addison from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 22. Lucille Grabski

MONKTON — Lucille Grabski, 91, of Monkton died suddenly at her home on April 3, 2010. She was born in Chicago on Oct. 2, 1918, the daughter of Leon J. and Pearl (Szudarski) Kraft.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1998; her parents; her brothers, Chester, Norbert, and Everett; and her sister, Leona Dudka.

In May the family will hold a private memorial to celebrate her life. She is greatly missed by all who loved her.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid and free obituaries. Paid obituaries run just as submitted with a charge of $9.00 per column inch, and the editor shapes free obituaries to conform to our editorial style. We run photos of the person if they are submitted in a relatively high-quality format.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN - Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
