GEORGE DOTY SR.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — George W. Doty Sr., 69, passed away on June 25, 2016, at Alaska Regional Hospital.

George was born Nov. 9, 1946, in Middletown, N.Y. Anchorage was his home for the last 26 years. Prior to moving to Alaska he spent years in Spokane, Wash., and Lincoln, Vt. He graduated from Minisink Valley High in 1964 and received his bachelor’s degree in Business from Burlington College in 1987.

BERNARD NEWTON

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Bernard (“Bernie,” “Barney”) Ellsworth Newton, 86, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, with his family by his side, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury after a courageous and hard-fought battle against pneumonia.

BELLE SENECAL

WHITING — A celebration of life honoring Belle S. Senecal will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, at Whiting Community Church in Whiting.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1922, and died on May 23, 2016. She was a resident of Brandon at the time of her passing. She was married to George.

KAREN WILLIAMS

BRANDON — A memorial service in celebration of the life of Karen Evelyn Williams, 55, who died March 4, 2016, will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at the Brandon American Legion Post No. 55.

Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends there for a time of remembrance.

DONALD PRATT

RUTLAND — Donald John Pratt, 69, died Saturday morning, June 11, 2016, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.He was born on Sept. 24, 1946, in Rutland, the son of Roscoe and Patricia (Morcombe) Pratt. Mr. Pratt grew up in Bridport, graduating from the Middlebury High School in 1964, and attended Champlain College.

He was employed by Tom McCann’s Store in Burlington prior to being relocated and promoted to manager to their store in Kingston, N.Y. He then became employed doing construction work, primarily painting and drywall finishing.

JOSEPH PHILION

SHOREHAM — A private graveside committal service and burial for Joseph Eric Philion, 67, who died Feb. 18, 2016, will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Lakeview Cemetery in Shoreham.

The family invites friends to share in a “Celebration of His Life” on Saturday, June 18, at noon, on the Shoreham town common, where a picnic will be held in his memory.

MIDDLEBURY — A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 26, at 2 p.m., in the Coach Barn at Shelburne Farms for Oletha “Lee” Bickford, 96, who passed away May 14, 2016, in Middlebury.

She was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Starksboro, the third oldest of 11 children of the late Vesper C. and Kate Belle (Moody) Thompson.

DONALD MARKWELL

TIMMONSVILLE, S.C. — Donald L. Markwell, 81, of Timmonsville, S.C., died at home on April 24, 2016.

He was born on June 24, 1934, in Keene, N.H. He graduated from Springfield (Vt.) High School in 1953. He farmed in Proctorsville, Vt., then Cornwall, Vt., from 1956 to 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna, of Timmonsville, S.C., and children Jo Ann Demarais of Timmonsville, S.C., Brian of Alburgh, Vt., and David of Keene, N.H.

He was predeceased by son, Arthur of Cornwall.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
