PATRIC MCNULLA

HOUSTON, Texas — Retired U.S. Air Force Captain Patric Michael McNulla Sr., husband of Paulette Legault McNulla, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016. Captain McNulla was a veteran of 23 years. He was born Dec. 9, 1938 in Vergennes, Vt., son of James McNulla Sr. and Kathleen (Norton) McNulla. Pat was a graduate of Vergennes High School.

MIDDLEBURY — Lewis John Hanfield, age 61, passed away Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

ELLEN BURKE

GAYSVILLE, Vt. — Ellen A. Burke, 68, passed away Oct. 11, 2016 at Porter Medical Center. She was born April 25, 1948 in Long Island City, N.Y., the daughter of John and Agnes (Cross) Peace. She is survived by her husband, Michael H. Burke of Gaysville. Ellen graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in English in 1970, where she met the love of her life.

Jacob "Jack" Spahn, 82, Addison

ADDISON — Jacob “Jack” Spahn, 82, passed away in the comfort of his family on Oct. 18, 2016, following a long illness. He was born in Trenton, N.J. on Nov. 15, 1933 to Jacob Sr. and Mary (Pegg) Spahn.

Jack attended Trenton State Teachers College where he played a number of sports and was a member of the band and chorus. Following college he moved to the Jersey Shore, where he was an assistant manager for Metlife Insurance Company and then district manager for Wyeth Lab before moving to Vermont with his wife Victoria and their children.

NANCY STEARNS

BRANDON — Nancy M. (Rougier) Stearns, 67, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. Mrs. Stearns was born in Burlington on Jan. 1, 1949. She was the daughter of Clarence and Janice (Flanders) Rougier. She graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School, class of 1967. She had been a resident of Brandon since 1996. Mrs. Stearns was a stay-at-home mother raising her children and worked several different jobs in the area. She loved her family and spent much of her time with her grandchildren.

CLAIRE PLANK

MIDDLEBURY — Claire M. Plank, 88, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury. She was born July 9, 1928 to Eric and Hilda (Gustafson) Johnson in Norwalk, Conn. She was a wife, mother, electrical engineer and a quietly staunch feminist.

ELEANOR MITCHELL

FERRISBURGH — Eleanor Mae Root Mitchell, 82, ended her days on Oct. 13, 2016. She was born to Cecil Ovette Root and Betsy Mae Hubbell on Sept. 26, 1934. She is survived by her husband, Robert F. Mitchell; three daughters Kathy Mitchell, Carol Mitchell and Betsey Mitchell; three grandchildren Allison Myrick, Dylan Myrick and Mitchell Jackman; her sister Jean Dolliver of Charlotte; and brother Fay in Boston.

SALLY HUTCHISON

BRANDON — Sally S. Hutchison, 77, of Brandon, passed away on Oct. 17, 2016, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. A complete obituary and funeral announcement will be published in a later edition. Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon is in charge of all arrangements.

BEVERLY DUCHESNE

MIDDLEBURY — Beverly I. Duchesne, 79, passed away unexpectedly at her home Saturday, Oct. 14, 2016. She was born Dec. 3, 1936 in Bridport, Vt., the youngest daughter of the late Kenneth and Rena (Whittemore) Murray.

On July 28, 1956, she married James Duchesne and traveled with him during his 16 year service in the U.S. Air Force until his death in 1972. She then returned to Middlebury with their two sons and took a job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a collection official where she dedicated 32 years until her retirement.

GEOFFREY DEMONG

CORNWALL — Geoffrey Lawrence Demong, 72, passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2016, in Cornwall in the home he lovingly built for his family. Geoff was a teacher, an athlete, an orchardist, a fireman, a master builder and craftsman, a vintner and a provider. He was unstintingly kind, dedicated to his life’s work, a man of values and above all else devoted to his family. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, son, uncle and friend.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
