John E. Griggs, 94, formerly of Middlebury

WOODSTOCK — John E. Griggs, 94, of Woodstock, Vt., died peacefully on July 30, 2016.

“Jack” was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on October 2, 1921, and grew up in Highland Park, N.J. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he went on to graduate from Rutgers University in June 1948 with a B.S. in Agriculture. While at Rutgers he met Janet Warden, who attended a nearby nursing school, on a blind date. They married in 1948 and moved to Middlebury, Vermont.

R. Bruce Grimm, 79, Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — R. Bruce Grimm peacefully passed away at Helen Porter Nursing Home on Monday evening August 1, 2016. He was born on July 13, 1937 in Mineola, New York, the son of Robert and Jeanne (Gilmour) Grimm. One of eight children, Bruce is survived by his mother, three brothers and two sisters, and by his wife, three children and grandchildren.

Robert G. ‘Bob’ Slater, 72, Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Robert G. “Bob” Slater of Middlebury passed away at home Saturday, July 30, with family by his side.

He was born March 24, 1944, the son of Robert G. Slater and Mary Louise (Hines) Slater in Ironton, Ohio, and grew up across the Ohio River in Russell, Ky.

DEAN JACKSON, 99, PANTON

PANTON — Dean Dunsmoor Jackson, longtime Panton dairy farmer and an agricultural leader, passed away July 29, 2016, at his Panton ancestral home, Roads-End Farm.

Dean was a sixth generation Jackson to farm on the family farm in Panton. He was born in the farmhouse on August 2, 1916, the youngest child of Ara C. and Lora Clark Jackson.

He attended the one-room school in East Panton through the eighth grade, and attended Vergennes High School for two years. Leaving high school, he worked on the family farm with his parents.

RUTH ANN TRASK, 86, NORTHBORO, MASS.

NORTHBOROUGH / WEST BOYLSTON, Mass. — Ruth Ann Shonyo Trask of Northborough, Mass., formerly of West Boylston, Mass., a former alumni information editor at Worcester (MA) Polytechnic Institute, passed away on July 26, 2016, in Northborough, Mass. She was born on Feb. 9, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to the late Lewis Dickinson Shonyo and Marion Fisher Shonyo of Lyndonville, Vt. Her stepmother, Alice Hawkins Shonyo, passed away in 1991.

ALBERT VAN DE WEERT

FERRISBURGH — Albert Van De Weert, 81, of Ferrisburgh, VT, passed on to his heavenly home on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

He was born October 6, 1934, in Paterson, NJ. He moved with his family from Warwick, NY, to their dairy farm in Ferrisburgh in 1965.

He was a member of the New Haven United Reformed Church.

MIDDLEBURY — Donna Mae Rowold, 66, passed away peacefully on July 20 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington. She was born in Warren, Ohio, and has made her home in several places including New York City, Fort Wayne, Ind., and in Middlebury for the last seven years.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — On the morning of July 11, 2016, Ernest B. Pomainville (Ernie), 66, passed away at his home in Fort Pierce, Florida. A Shoreham resident for most of his life, he was loved and cherished by his wife Ann; his children, Shawn, Andrea and Melissa; his grandson, Ethan; step-grandson, Nicholas; his mother, Aileen; his siblings, Calene, Shelley, and Rocke; and Ann’s eight children.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
