NANCY GRAHAM

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Nancy Martin Graham died Dec. 3, 2015, at her home in Charlottesville, Va.

She was born Oct. 18, 1921, and grew up in NYC and Glen Cove. In 1939 she rode as a model for Captain Vladimir S. Littauer’s book, “Be a Better Horseman.”

In 1941, Nancy married John Winston Graham, an Army Air Corps pilot, in Puerto Rico. He died in a training flight three months later.

SANDRA RUVERA

MIDDLEBURY — Sandra Jean Ruvera, 73, of Middlebury passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

She was born Jan. 7, 1942, in Barre, the daughter of Aldo John and Josephine (Franzi) Ruvera. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1959.

Sandra work for many years with the Vermont state Family Services Department, retiring as District 1 director.

JONATHAN SPENCER WILLIS III

SALISBURY, Vt. / DOVER, Del. — Surely Jack’s last prayer was “Thank you, Lord.”

Jonathan Spencer Willis III, of Dover, Delaware, and Lake Dunmore, in Salisbury, Vermont, died at home in the company of his loving family on December 5, 2015. He was 75.

Jack was born on November 15, 1940, in Milford, Delaware, the son of J. Spencer Willis Jr., and Stella Warner Willis.

ROLAND GRACE

LINCOLN — Roland W. Grace Jr., 54, lost his battle with cancer on Dec. 2, 2015.

He was born Jan. 29, 1961, the son of Roland and Marjorie A. Grace of Lincoln.

He is survived by his daughters, Jenny and Shannon of Vermont; a step-son, John of Florida; four grandchildren; three brothers, three sisters; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws an other relatives.

He was a roofer for many years, and was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and was proud to give his service.

DANIEL MORRISON JR.

LEICESTER — Daniel Kenneth Morrison Jr., 90, of Leicester died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury. He was the son of the late Daniel Kenneth and Alda (Bezanson) Morrison.

Ken was born May 1, 1925, in Lynn, Mass. He attended schools in New Bedford, Mass., and Springfield, Vt., graduating in 1943. He received his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Massachusetts State College (now UMass-Amherst) in 1950. When he returned to Springfield, he started a herd of Jerseys and raised chickens for hatching eggs.

JOYCE MUZZY

NORTH FERRISBURGH — Joyce (Munson) Muzzy, 84, of North Ferrisburgh died at Porter Hospital of natural causes on Nov. 19, 2015.

She was born Jan. 23, 1931. Her husbands Basil Muzzy and William Shimel and her son Richard Shimel predeceased her. Her children Lynn Jerger, Mark Shimel and Odessa Wood were with her during her last days. Joyce was also blessed with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She loved serving others and continued that spirit of giving by donating her body to UVM’s medical center.

ARTHUR PUTNAM

ADDISON — Arthur Alton Putnam, 68, of Addison passed away Nov. 25, 2015, in Burlington, with his wife Sandra by his side.

Arthur was born Oct. 2, 1947, in Middlebury, son of Bruce and Mary (Taylor) Putnam. He was raised on the family farm in Addison until the age of 17 when he joined the U.S. Army. He served his country in Vietnam from 1965 until 1971 when he was shot in combat. He was a sergeant who earned the Purple Heart for his service as well as Expert Badge for rifle.

WALTER M. PYLE

SHOREHAM — Walter M. Pyle, 93, of Shoreham died Thursday morning Nov. 26, 2015, at Helen Porter Healthcare in Middlebury.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1921, in Jamesburg, N.J., the son of Thomas and Agnes (Johnson) Pyle.

Mr. Pyle graduated from the Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown, N.Y., and the New York State University in Ithaca.

He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Co. D, 47th Infantry, 9th Division, earning seven campaign stars and a bronze star.

JOHN R. RULE

PROCTOR — John R. Rule, 66, of Proctor passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Rutland Medical Center.

He was born on Aug. 12, 1949, in Fort Monmouth, N.J., the son of Robert S. Rule and Sylvia I. Steady.

Predeceased by his father, Robert Stanley Rule, and his grandparents.

RICHARD C. STONE

NEW HAVEN — Richard C. Stone, 83, of New Haven died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Burlington.

He was born June 13, 1932, in Clinton, Mass., the son of Walter and Mary (Smith) Stone.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
