Football teams set to open playoffs

ADDISON COUNTY — The area’s three high school football teams will open postseason play this weekend, two with top playoff seeds.

Middlebury (8-0) will open its title defense as the No. 1 seed in Division I. The defending champion Tigers will bring a 19-game winning streak into a quarterfinal matchup with No. 8 Champlain Valley (3-5). That game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday at Doc Collins Field.

Middlebury eleven shuts down visiting Bobcats, 35-6

MIDDLEBURY — Panther quarterback Matt Milano threw for a career-high four touchdown passes to lead the Middlebury College football team to a 35-6 win over visiting Bates (1-3) this past Saturday. The 3-2 Panthers earned their 26th consecutive victory over Bates and will return to action this Saturday at Trinity.

Panther field hockey team posts two wins, including coach's 300th

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team rolled to a pair of recent one-sided wins, including the 300th of Coach Katherine DeLorenzo’s coaching career.

DeLorenzo, who earlier this season won her 200th game at Middlebury, has a career head coaching record of 300-114-2. This season the Panthers are 13-1, 8-1 in NESCAC play, and are ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III. They will host Wesleyan on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Panther women's soccer wins one, loses one

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team split two NESCAC games over the weekend. At 8-6, 4-5 in league play, the defending NESCAC champion Panthers can apparently nail down the No. 5 seed for the upcoming league playoffs with a win over visiting last place Wesleyan at 11 a.m. this Saturday.

On this past Saturday, the Panthers blanked visiting Bates, 2-0. The Bobcats dropped to 7-6, 3-5 in league play.

Panther men's soccer splits two games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team split two recent games to move to 7-3-3, 4-2-3 in NESCAC play. The Panthers are currently in fifth place in the league standings, but will look to move up when they host Wesleyan (7-2-3, 5-2 NESCAC heading into a Wednesday game vs. Trinity) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Last Saturday, the Panthers edged visiting Bates, 2-1, in overtime. Greg Conrad scored 2:28 into overtime to lift the Panthers over the Bobcats (4-8-1, 2-6 NESCAC).

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Vergennes controlled most of the territory and the action on Friday, earning a 36-9 edge in shots at goal, but the Middlebury Union High School soccer team relied on defense and goaltending to hang in and earn a 1-1 tie.

VERGENNES — Maybe in the end the result on Saturday between the 9-3-2 Tigers and the host 3-11 Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team is not so surprising — MUHS won, but just by 1-0 and needed almost 74 minutes to score against the stubborn Commodores.

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury and Otter Valley union high school football teams won games this past weekend to nail down No. 1 seeds in their divisions, while Mount Abraham lost on the road but still earned a postseason berth.

TIGERS, 51-0

MUHS dismissed visiting Burlington, 51-0, on Friday, as the Tigers posted their third straight shutout.

Mt. Abe girls' soccer drops final matchup to Rice, 2-1

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team dropped its final game of the regular season, 2-1, at Rice on Friday, but the Eagles still apparently earned a top-four seed in Division II.

As of Sunday’s deadline for this edition of the Independent, the Vermont Principals’ Association had yet to make official tournament pairings.

Field Hockey: Otters, Tigers secure high playoff seeds

ADDISON COUNTY — In local field hockey action late last week, Otter Valley and Middlebury won road games to nail down high seeds. Mount Abraham was idle due to the South Burlington teachers’ strike.

The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to make playoff pairings official on Monday. According to unofficial standings at the VPA website all three local teams will be hosting games this week.
