Otter offense piles up the points against Milton, 44-22

MILTON — The Division III Otter Valley Union High School football team erupted for 30 points in Friday’s second half on the way to a 44-22 victory over host D-II squad Milton.

Junior back Carson Leary scored four touchdowns for the Otters, who improved to 3-1 and are 2-0 in D-III. Milton dropped to 2-3.

Leary’s scored twice in the first half, on a six-yard run in the first quarter and on a 62-yard screen pass in the second quarter, as OV took a 14-8 lead into intermission.

Tiger football improves to 5-0 with rout of CVU

HINESBURG — The Middlebury Union High School football team remained undefeated with another one-sided victory this past weekend, defeating host Champlain Valley, 48-21, on Saturday.

The 5-0 Tigers, as they had the weekend before vs. Rutland, scored six first-half touchdowns. They led the 1-4 Redhawks at halftime, 41-7.

Bobby Ritter (six carries for a 92 yards) scored three rushing touchdowns in the first half and also caught a 61-yard scoring pass from quarterback Austin Robinson.

Tigers, Eagles run well at Mount Abe cross country meet

BRISTOL — On a virtually ideal Tuesday afternoon for running at Mount Abraham Union High School — 60 degrees, windless and mostly cloudy — the Middlebury boys’ cross country team took second and the Eagle girls were third to highlight the Eagles’ only home meet of the fall.

Tiger junior Christopher Garner finished fifth in the seven-team boys’ race for the top finish among local runners, while Eagle senior Chris Carter (eighth) and MUHS junior Nikhil Plouffe also cracked the top 10.

Otter field hockey wins sixth straight

MANCHESTER — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team blanked host Burr & Burton on Tuesday, 2-0, to improve to 6-1.

OV pitched its fourth straight shutout and won its sixth straight game to set up a Friday matchup at undefeated Division III power Bellows Falls. As of Tuesday, OV was third in D-II behind Rice (6-1) and U-32 (5-1) in the Vermont Principals’ Association quality-point standings.

Soccer: Tiger girls get key win, Eagle boys tie

ADDISON COUNTY — A key victory by the Middlebury girls on Monday highlighted local high school soccer action earlier this week. In other action, all on Tuesday, the Mount Abraham boys settled for a tie, Vergennes lost another one-goal game, and Middlebury dropped a game to a top Division I team.

Panther women's soccer edged, 2-1

MIDDLEBURY — Undefeated Bowdoin edged the host Middlebury College women’s soccer team on Saturday, 2-1, as the defending NESCAC champion Panthers dropped to 3-3 overall, 0-3 in league play. The Panthers return to action on Saturday at Colby.

The Panthers had first-half chances by Jamie Soroka, Claire Nishioka and Krystina Reynolds, all set up by Hannah Robinson, but could not convert as the first 45 minutes remained scoreless.

Panther men's soccer remains unbeaten

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team won three recent games to improve to 5-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 in NESCAC play. All three wins were by shutout, as the Panthers have now gone 470 minutes without allowing a goal

On Sept. 17, the Panthers defeated host Southern Vermont, 4-0, as Greg Conrad scored twice and added an assist. The Panthers got on the scoreboard with just under seven minutes to play in the opening half when Conrad netted his first of the day with an assist from Andres Rodlauer.

No. 1 Bowdoin tips Panther field hockey

MIDDLEBURY — In a Saturday battle of top NCAA Division III college field hockey teams, visiting Bowdoin scored twice in a span of 1:29 during the final minutes to overtake Middlebury and win, 2-1.

The No. 1 Polar Bears, the defending NCAA champions, improved to 4-0. The Panthers, who entered the contest at No. 4, dropped to 4-1. They will visit Colby on Saturday.

Cardinals outlast Panther eleven

MIDDLEBURY — In a Saturday matchup of the 2013 NESCAC football co-champions, visiting Wesleyan held off a late charge by Middlebury to earn a 22-14 win in the season-opener for both teams. Wesleyan took advantage of two interceptions and 83 yards of penalties on Middlebury. The Panthers return to action at Colby this Saturday.

Wesleyan scored first on the first play of a drive, a 65-yard catch-and-run completion from quarterback Jesse Warren to Jay Fabien.
