Middlebury field hockey opens with pair of wins

MIDDLEBURY — The new-look Middlebury College field hockey team got off to a 2-0 start with wins on Sunday and Monday, and Coach Katharine DeLorenzo saw signs the Panthers could answer their biggest question entering the 2015 season.

Middlebury — ranked No. 4 in the early NCAA Division III poll — returns its entire starting defense and seven of its top 10 scorers, but graduated most of its starting midfield, including two all-Americans, from the team that won the NESCAC tournament for the third straight time and reached the NCAA semifinal round.

Women's soccer gets win, tie in first games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team opened its season with a tie and a win in two recent home games. On Sunday, the Panthers and NESCAC rival Connecticut settled for a 1-1 stalemate, and on Sept. 9 the Panthers blanked visiting Colby-Sawyer, 4-0. The Panthers next play at Amherst on Saturday.

Otter Valley girls' soccer tops Twin Valley to pick up fourth win of fall

WHITINGHAM — The Otter Valley Union High School girls’ soccer team picked up a Division III road win on Tuesday, 2-0 at Twin Valley.

The Otters improved to 4-2 and unofficially are in the top four in the D-III standings.

Goalie Gabby Poalino stopped eight shots and recorded her fourth shutout of the fall. Coach Rick Hedding said some of her saves were critical, and also credited midfielders Abbie Pinkowski and Nicole Rossi for their ball movement and defensive work.

Men's soccer begins with three victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team opened its season with three wins, sandwiching a home NESCAC win on Saturday between road wins on Sept. 9 and Sept. 15. The 3-0 Panthers play at Amherst on Saturday.

On Sept. 9, the Panthers defeated host Norwich, 1-0, dropping the Cadets to 3-1.

Course hosts alumni golf tourney

MIDDLEBURY — This past Saturday and Sunday saw Ralph Myhre Golf Course host the annual Middlebury College Alumni Golf Tournament, an event held in honor 1949 college alumnus Gordon Perine.

Earning Meacham Plaques for individual low gross scores were John Giebink and Carolyn Perine (Gordon’s daughter-in-law).

Golf tourney to aid hockey programs

BRANDON — The annual Friends of Middlebury Hockey Golf Tournament will be held at Neshobe Golf Club in Brandon on Sunday, Sept. 20.

This event is an important fundraiser for all hockey in Middlebury and the surrounding communities — youth hockey, high school programs, adult leagues, etc. The Memorial Sports Center is a key community resource, providing year-round activities for people of all ages and proudly operated by Friends of Middlebury Hockey.

Commodore girls' soccer win third straight

SWANTON — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team on Monday picked up its third straight win, 2-0, over host Missisquoi.

VUHS Co-Coach Peter Maneen said the Commodores dominated the first half, putting a dozen shots on the T-Bird goal, but failing to score.

Ciara McKay broke the ice for VUHS about five minutes into the second half, with an assist from Caroline Johnston. Annika Vorsteveld added the insurance goal with about 15 minutes to go, assisted by Felicia Armell.

Winter swim team sets info evening

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Aquatic Club will host an information night for swimmers ages 8-18 on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. at the Middlebury College Natatorium. Tryouts for new swimmers for the fall/winter season will be on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. at the college natatorium.

Eagle boys soccer wins; MUHS, VUHS defeated

ADDISON COUNTY — The county’s boys’ high school soccer teams all hit the road for games on Tuesday, when Mount Abraham pulled out a close win, and Vergennes and Middlebury came up short.

The Eagles got a tie-breaking goal from Nick Catlin with seven minutes to go and picked up a 2-1 win at Lake Division rival Milton. Dylan Weaver’s first-half goal gave the Eagles the lead over the 1-3 Yellowjackets, but Ryan Brown equalized for Milton after halftime.
