Middlebury selectmen seek spending cuts

MIDDLEBURY — In their meeting Tuesday, the Middlebury selectboard spent time considering additional reductions to the draft 2012-2013 municipal spending plan.

It was in late November that town staff presented the board with an initial budget draft of $8,504,690, representing a $230,825 increase compared to this year. It’s a budget that would require a 3.4-cent increase in the municipal tax rate in order to maintain existing services and capital improvement priorities.

Survey eyes how well businesses in Middlebury meet local needs

MIDDLEBURY — The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) is circulating a marketing survey to get a sense from local shoppers and merchants about how the town could improve its retail, parking, restaurant and housing amenities.

The 17-question survey is based on a similar questionnaire that the University of Vermont administered in the town of Newport a few years ago. Respondents are asked to weigh in on a series of topics, including:

Vergennes Police Log: Man cited for violating conditions

VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested a city man late on Dec. 5 for violating his conditions of release, an action taken after they spotted him acting suspiciously, near the intersection of Main and South Water streets.

Middlebury Police Log: Police probe local business embezzlement

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police began investigating embezzlement allegations filed by Paquette Storage on Route 7 North on Dec. 7. Police said the embezzlement allegedly occurred between May of 2008 and May of 2011.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

  Received a report that $72 had been stolen from a student’s backpack at Middlebury College’s McCullough Hall on Dec. 5.

Vermont State Police Log: False information draws charges

ADDISON COUNTY — While patrolling Morgan Horse Farm Road in Weybridge on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 8, Vermont State Police Trooper Tim Hanley checked on a vehicle parked in a pull off next to the bridge over Otter Creek.

The trooper said the driver, Jamie C. Martin, 30, of Castleton, falsely identified himself as a Massachusetts man. Martin’s privilege to drive in Vermont is suspended.

Commodore boys' hoop quashes a rebellion

VERGENNES — A Vergennes Union High School basketball team with high hopes for this season took a step forward on Tuesday when the Commodores hung on for a 67-62 win over visiting Division I foe South Burlington.

VUHS (2-0) had led by 12 late in the third quarter, but the 0-1 Rebels repeatedly penetrated the lane and cut the lead to two three times in the final three minutes.
