“I’d love to move to Vermont and start a company here,” the snowboarder said with a sigh as we shared a chairlift at Stowe. I sighed too: If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, my mortgage would be paid.

That was nine years ago. Chris Kaiser, the snowboarder, went on to found Vermont Peanut Butter and this Feb. 6, he will join a panel discussion at the Capitol Plaza in Montpelier to celebrate Vermont Entrepreneurship Week.

Opinion: Proposed gas pipeline runs counter to regional plan

Editor’s note: The Cornwall selectboard on Jan. 30 sent this letter to all Addison County Regional Planning Commission members.

Your commission has been asked to approve Vermont Gas’ proposed “Phase 2” natural gas transmission pipeline through our community. We expect you are familiar with the details of that proposal and the arguments made by proponents. The Cornwall selectboard respectfully requests that you comply with the ACRPC Regional Plan and disapprove the request.

Opinion: Seeger's music, environmentalism, spirit still inspire

I want to honor Pete Seeger who died at the age of 94 on Jan. 27, 2014.

I thank Pete for inviting us to sing along. Years ago, in Burlington, I had the chance to be in his physical presence at a Memorial Auditorium concert. Pete’s spirit lives forever, since we have the ability to reflect it, singing his songs and keeping our hearts open.

I thank Pete for having been a steady force behind the cleanup of the Hudson River.

Vermont State Police Log: Ferrisburgh man, Milton man held for string of burglaries

VERMONT — Last week Vermont State Police said their investigation showed that a Ferrisburgh man and a Milton man were responsible for a two-month-long burglary spree crossing three counties.

Since December 2013, state police have received multiple reports of burglaries in Chittenden, Franklin and Lamoille counties, including the towns of Westford, Underhill, Jericho, Milton, Fletcher and East Fairfield. The items stolen and method of burglary revealed a pattern of crime.

Middlebury Police Log: Homeowner finds intoxicated stranger on her couch

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Gerald Vanzyverden, 22, of Athyn, Pa., for unlawful trespass into a dwelling, after he was allegedly found asleep on a sofa inside a Monroe Street residence on Jan. 31. Police said the homeowner suspects she might have inadvertently left her door unlocked. Police said they found Vanzyverden “extremely intoxicated.”

Police took Vanzyverden to the Marble Valley Correctional Center for lack of bail.

Vergennes Police Log: Routine calls add up

VERGENNES — In a relatively quiet week between Jan. 27 and Feb. 2, Vergennes police handled mostly routine matters, aiding the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, dealing with car accidents, looking into two cases of alleged retail theft, and issuing one citation for driving with a suspended license.

In that time period, Vergennes police:

•  On Jan. 27 helped VARS with four separate patients at Northlands Job Corps, in one case dealing with an unruly student interfering with medical and police work.

Bristol Police Log: Police probe a phone scam

BRISTOL — Bristol police recently twice cited a town woman for driving with a suspended license.

Police on Jan. 5 saw Melodie A. Campbell, 41, driving a vehicle on East Street, and later discovered that Campbell was prohibited by conditions of release from two previous driving-with-suspended-license citations. Police again saw Campbell driving on Jan. 30, and arrested her. Campbell is due to answer the charges in Addison County Superior Court on March 3.

Weybridge teacher earns major awards

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge Elementary School kindergarten teacher Joy Dobson has had a very good couple of months.

President Barack Obama recently announced her selection as one of only 102 national recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
