Opinion: Cutting Porter RN's not the right way to save money

The news that a number of registered nurses will be laid off at Porter Hospital is disturbing. Porter Hospital obviously plays a very important role in our community and the wider area. RNs are on the front lines and give us advice about medications and treatment when we need it — they cannot be replaced by people with less training. How can we feel confident that we will receive safe patient care if and when we need it if staffing levels of these important providers are reduced at Porter Hospital?

MIddlebury Police Log: Student helps lead police to stolen laptop

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College student on Jan. 31 provided a valuable assist to state and local authorities who were able to find his property and other items allegedly stolen from campus.

Middlebury police received a report that a MacBook laptop computer had been stolen from a college student. The student was able to trace his stolen device to a North Ferrisburgh address, according to police.

Vergennes Police Log: Police deal with family disputes, unruly customers

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Jan. 25 and 31 dealt with a variety of incidents, including a family dispute, a possible case of driving under the influence of drugs, a jewelry theft, and an unruly drugstore customer.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

•  On Jan. 25 helped a car owner get into a locked vehicle on Monkton Road.

•  On Jan. 25 checked the welfare of a Main Street woman on behalf of a friend; she was found to be OK.

Vermont State Police Log: Icy conditions result in several accidents

ADDISON COUNTRY — Snowfall on Friday, Jan. 29, resulted in some traffic crashes that kept Vermont State Police busy.

Police said the weather changed from light snow to heavy, wet snow with local accumulations of two inches on Route 22A during that morning. At around 10:30 a.m., troopers were called to Route 22A at the Bridport-Shoreham line for several vehicles that had slid off the roadway. They investigated three crashes involving tractor-trailers.

Bristol Police Log: Police received skills training in December

BRISTOL — During December, Bristol police officers took part in training four times, according to a recently released log for that month. That training included a refresher course in National Information Based Reporting Systems, an online testing certification to remain compliant with the NCIC national crime database, and eight hours of training on interacting with people experiencing mental health issues. Bristol Chief Kevin Gibbs took part in a training session for chiefs and the sheriff held at the Middlebury Inn.
