Vergennes Police Log: Two county men cited on drug charges

VERGENNES — Vergennes police last week arrested two county men on drug charges in separate incidents. Police lodged both at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.

Vermont State Police Log: Burglars repeatedly hit several lake properties

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to several May 29 reports of burglaries from residents in towns along Lake Champlain.

The first report came from a homeowner on Mount Independence Road in Orwell, where the perpetrator(s) made entry by forcing open a bathroom window and stole prescription medication. The crime is believed to have occurred between May 21 and May 28.

WOODSTOCK — Mount Abraham Union High School senior Jona Scott earned Division II and overall medalist honors at the state championship meet at the Woodstock Country Club on Wednesday by firing a 69, but his Eagle team fell one stroke short of a D-II team championship.

On the ball: OV softball wins

BRANDON — The No. 7 Otter Valley Union High School softball team broke an early 2-2 tie on Wednesday on the way to a 12-2 win over visiting No. 10 Lake Region in a Division II first-round game.

The 10-7 Otters are scheduled, weather permitting, to travel to Lyndon on Friday to take on the No. 2 Vikings (15-1) in a quarterfinal. LRU finished at 8-9.

Playoff scheduling changes came in fast and furious on Wednesday, mostly made due to impending local high school graduations this weekend, but also made with an eye to less than ideal weather forecast for the next few days.

On the ball: Spring playoffs arrive

Three local high school softball teams, two baseball teams and two lacrosse teams will host playoff games this week; two of those squads, Otter Valley baseball and Middlebury girls’ lacrosse, earned No. 2 seeds; and one first-round match-up pits Addison County rival baseball teams, defending Division II baseball champion Vergennes vs. perennial contender Mount Abraham.

Habitat for Humanity builds first of four homes in Cornwall

CORNWALL — Angela McCluskey had grown tired of seeing her son Jonathan turn in for the night on the living room couch in their small apartment while she and her daughter Caitlin got to sleep in beds.

So McCluskey took what she believed was a long shot: She applied to become the owner of one of four new Habitat for Humanity homes to be built within a 13-acre subdivision off Cornwall’s Delong Road.

Police, public works costs drive $1.83 million city budget draft

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week got its first look at a draft 2013-2014 city budget, one that City Manager Mel Hawley prepared and said could mean the second increase since 2008 in the tax rate devoted solely to paying for municipal services.

Aldermen will make the final decision on the budget and the municipal portion of the tax rate by the end of June. That portion of the tax rate does not support school spending.
