Drivers duel in races at Devil's Bowl

WEST HAVEN — Ron Proctor waited nearly two years to carry a checkered flag at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, but the wait became worth it as the veteran driver won the double-points Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championship in dominant fashion on Friday, July 18. Proctor headlined a list of winners that also included Bucko Branham, Jamy Begor, and Chris LaVair.

Two runners and a pitcher earn recognition

VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association chose a 72-year-old marathon specialist, a junior softball pitcher from BFA-Fairfax High School, and a junior track and field athlete from Mount Mansfield Union as its athletes of the month for May.

Elected in statewide balloting of VSMA membership were: Newton Baker of Montpelier as the Open Division Athlete of the Month, Kayla Mathieu of BFA-Fairfax as the High School Female Athlete of the Month, and Alec Eschholz of Mount Mansfield Union as the High School Male Athlete of the Month.

Bristol Police Log: Cops have busy June

BRISTOL — Officers in the Bristol Police Department were active during the month of June, as can be seen in the log recently submitted to the newspaper by Chief Kevin Gibbs.

During the month, Bristol police:

•  On June 1 at 3:29 a.m. assisted Vermont State Police with a traffic stop and consent search on suspicion of driving under the influence and drug possession.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 125 in Hancock, about a half mile west of Route 100, at a little past 5:30 a.m. on July 17.

Middlebury Police Log: Texting driver issued a ticket

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on July 18 at 3:57 p.m. received a report from a resident that the driver of a vehicle on Court Street was possibly impaired. When the officer contacted the driver, he admitted to texting while driving. The officer issued the driver a ticket for doing so.

Between July 14 and 21, Middlebury police dealt with a variety of incidents including noise disturbances, welfare checks and many traffic stops.

BRISTOL — As a child, you may have been given a lollipop or a sticker after braving a doctor’s visit. At Bristol’s Mountain Health Center, you’ll probably get a few tomatoes and a bag of spinach.

The modern twist on giving a treat after a doctor’s visit is feasible because of a new garden outside the Health Center office featuring healthy options such as tomatoes, spinach, arugula and kale.

Try prenatal yoga in Vergennes

VERGENNES — On Monday nights at 6 p.m., the yoga studio at Two Wolves Center on Main Street in Vergennes looks predictably like any other yoga class — at least at first glance.

Exposed brick walls, quiet music, and colorful yoga mats create an ambiance of serenity. Attendees saunter in and find a place on the floor.

A closer look at the participants, however, reveals what makes Monday nights at Two Wolves special: this is a prenatal yoga class, the participants are all pregnant women.

Books in mailbox can inspire kids about reading

Imagine this: A child who is eager to explore, learn and grow is signed up for a program where every month he or she receives a package in the mail from a nice lady in Nashville containing a brand new book.

For free.

Impossible? Not quite.

Imagination Library is the name of this very charity that country music legend Dolly Parton established back in 1996 to help foster a love for reading among young children in East Tennessee.
