BRIDPORT — As dairy farmers from around the county sat at tables at the Bridport Grange Monday for an annual lunch with legislators sipping coffee from paper cups emblazoned with “Vermont Milk,” the depressed price of milk couldn’t have been far from their minds. These days, farmers are selling their milk at prices well below the cost of production.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Corrections Commissioner Andrew Pallito said on Monday he will consider re-establishing a Probation and Parole office in Middlebury, though he stressed such a move will depend on the state finding a low-cost — or preferably no-cost — space in the community.

ADDISON COUNTY — Three of the four local union high school boys’ basketball teams had plenty to brag about by the end of this past season, and the fourth began a rebuilding process that should pay dividends next winter.

I really wanted the door prize: an engraved Wheatley fly box. Wheatley makes really nice fly boxes. Sleek, shiny, thin, anodized aluminum — like the sort of electronic gadgets some people covet.
I don’t usually covet electronic gadgets, but I do sometimes covet fishing gear. I coveted that fly box.

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Department of Health (DOH) would drastically scale back hours and reduce the workforce at its Middlebury district office by almost one-third under a restructuring plan designed to adhere to fiscal year 2010 state budget guidelines recommended by the Douglas administration.

MONKTON — Doris Brace was one of the last students to attend the Monkton Boro School, graduating as an eighth-grader in 1959. For her, visiting the old building isn’t just a reminder of the way the school once looked, but also the type of education she and her classmates received in the classroom.
