MIDDLEBURY — Vermont had the distinction in 2000 of becoming the first state in the union to approve a civil unions law, through which same-sex couples were extended many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Nine years later, Vermont became the first state to approve a same-sex marriage law without being required to do so by a court decision.
MIDDLEBURY — An organization representing downtown Middlebury property owners is requesting that the town import and install a temporary parking structure to make up for the long-term loss of approximately 50 spaces during replacement of the railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.
With winter fast approaching and this year’s garden put to bed, our thoughts turn towards our gardens of the future. WILLISTON — Even as the first snowflakes of the year fell in the Champlain Valley Thursday, it was easy for any observer to note the progress construction crews have made on Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.
A tour hosted by Vermont Gas Systems officials shuttled reporters to different sites around Chittenden County where workers are digging trenches and laying pipe.
MIDDLEBURY — After a dominant performance on home turf in this past weekend’s NCAA Division III Regional, the 19-1 Middlebury College field hockey team is going back to the NCAA Final Four for the first time since 2011.
The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in the most recent coaches’ poll, dismissed No. 5 Ursinus, 5-1, on Sunday in the regional final, a day after rolling over the University of New England, 7-0.
ADDISON COUNTY — Local hunters as young as 8 years old brought 107 deer to be weighed at Addison County reporting stations during Youth Hunting Weekend, Nov. 8 and 9, a total comparable with that in recent years.
In the past four years, the Youth Hunting Weekend take in Addison County has ranged from a low of 95 in 2010 to a high of 124 in 2012.
