MIDDLEBURY — Frankie Dunleavy often tells her students that a foreign language is like a puzzle. It’s a puzzle that has already been created; it’s up to the student to put together the pieces.

Dunleavy has helped hundreds of students put together those pieces during her more than three decades as a language teacher at Middlebury Union High School.

She’s now ready for the next challenge. She’ll wrap up her last class at MUHS next week.

“It’s time to move on,” she said during a recent interview.

Bristol town plan shaping up, but critics warn language is vague

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — As the new Bristol town plan quickly takes form, the Bristol Planning Commission on Tuesday continued to grapple with the level of detail necessary to pass and implement an effective plan.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Board of Zoning approval on June 1 approved a revised site plan submitted by Champlain Oil Co. of South Burlington, a move that removes one hurdle for COCO’s plan for a multi-use Route 7 development but still leaves other issues to be resolved by the state’s Environmental Court.

COCO’s revised plan for a gas station and a building that would be shared by a Jiffy Mart and a fast-food restaurant called for all of its septic and wastewater treatment elements to be contained on a 9.7-acre site.

Kelly Bevere — Coach of the Year. It rhymes.

Kelly Bevere — Mom of the Year. That also works.

Kelly’s Middlebury College softball team won 26 regular season games this spring, swept through the NESCAC tournament undefeated (3-0), and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Just a couple weeks later, she gave birth to Owen, a slugger, born on May 27, weighing in at nine pounds 15 ounces.

Partisan attacks against 'the government' mirror tragedy of the commons

Posted on June 9, 2011 |
By Addy Indy Staff

A frequent theme in this column is imploring that actions taken by individuals or boards, first serve the common good. In an elegantly written column this week, Ira Chaleff, outgoing chairman of the Congressional Management Foundation, captures this same theme with an apt analogy that addresses today’s congressional dysfunction. It is directed to our congressional leaders and reprinted below:

Clippings: You can't measure your journey in miles

I suppose that one of these days I should thank my parents for convincing me to apply to Middlebury College. Like many kids who grow up in Addison County, I started to crave a change of scenery sometime around my junior year in high school. When it came time to apply to college, the last thing I wanted was for my big move to be from one side of Middlebury to the other — after all, my sister had gone all the way to the exotic lands of Connecticut for college.
