VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Dec. 16 will vote on whether to support the city recreation committee’s recommendation for a toddler park between the city pool and East Street.
Aldermen have been pondering for months whether to spend $21,000 of non-taxpayer funds on the project: a playground on a roughly 0.3-acre parcel at a site that was chosen because it is close to most city homes and next to recreation facilities.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials have put the brakes on planning for a new, local skate park in wake of the loss of $30,000 in seed money and what they said has been a lack of interest exhibited by prospective users of such a facility.
MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) Executive Director Terry McKnight died unexpectedly of a major heart attack on Saturday, Nov. 29, just weeks away from transitioning into retirement following more than a decade with the county’s largest affordable housing organization. He was 64.
“This is a real personal tragedy,” longtime ACCT board President John Tenny said of the impact McKnight’s death will have on his family, friends and associates.
VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School fully reopened on Wednesday after a major steam leak in its classroom wing on the Friday after Thanksgiving damaged several rooms and compromised air quality.
VUHS and Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials spread the word over the weekend that the school would be closed on Monday. On Monday, they announced that repairs would be ongoing and classes would not be held, although teachers and other employees returned to work and sports practices resumed.
CHICAGO — In its 30th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, the Gatorade Co. on Thursday announced Austin Robinson of Middlebury Union High School as its 2014-15 Gatorade Vermont Football Player of the Year. Robinson is the first Gatorade Vermont Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Middlebury Union High School.
EAST MIDDLEBURY — Vermont aviation officials are seeking federal funding to extend and widen the runway at the Middlebury State Airport. But some neighbors of the East Middlebury facility are hoping the project remains grounded due to concerns about a potential increase in air traffic and the required pruning of some buffer trees along the takeoff and landing approaches.
At issue is a proposal to lengthen the Middlebury Airport runway by 700 feet, to a total of 3,200 feet, and also widen it from the current 50 feet, to 60 feet.

The time was 1:01 p.m., the same time of day that Michael Brown was shot dead by a police officer on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Mo. The shooting of the 18-year-old black man reignited a national discussion on racism and police brutality, especially after a grand jury last week declined to bring charges against the officer, Darren Wilson.
