Habitat for Humanity builds first of four homes in Cornwall

CORNWALL — Angela McCluskey had grown tired of seeing her son Jonathan turn in for the night on the living room couch in their small apartment while she and her daughter Caitlin got to sleep in beds.

So McCluskey took what she believed was a long shot: She applied to become the owner of one of four new Habitat for Humanity homes to be built within a 13-acre subdivision off Cornwall’s Delong Road.

Police, public works costs drive $1.83 million city budget draft

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week got its first look at a draft 2013-2014 city budget, one that City Manager Mel Hawley prepared and said could mean the second increase since 2008 in the tax rate devoted solely to paying for municipal services.

Aldermen will make the final decision on the budget and the municipal portion of the tax rate by the end of June. That portion of the tax rate does not support school spending.

Teacher who founded Starksboro art program is retiring

STARKSBORO — After more than two decades at Robinson Elementary School, art teacher Vera Ryersbach is retiring this month. She leaves quite a legacy behind — when Ryersbach came on board as a volunteer in 1989, Robinson was the last school in the Addison Northeast district that did not have an art teacher.

VERMONT — As summer heats up and the growing season is in full swing, groups around Vermont are stepping up their activism on an agricultural issue that is stirring up controversy around the state and around the world: genetically modified crops.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have deliberately modified DNA — scientists insert genetic material from other species to create a modified organism with different hormones, proteins or chemicals meant to do anything from repel insects to withstanding certain climates.

College Commencement: Graduates urged to nurture connections

MIDDLEBURY — Unseasonably bad wind and rain on Sunday drove the Middlebury College commencement ceremony indoors for the first time in 21 years. The 557 graduates of the class of 2013 gathered in a packed Nelson Recreation Center to receive their diplomas, in a ceremony that was in turns funny, thought-provoking and emotionally moving.

Overflow spaces around campus live-streamed the ceremony for friends and relatives whom the Nelson space — which could seat only 1,800 of the anticipated 5,000 commencement visitors — could not accommodate.

Kindergarten teacher took winding road to VUES job

VERGENNES — Unlike some longtime educators, Vergennes Union Elementary School kindergarten teacher Donna Ebel did not grow up convinced she wanted to spend her career working with students.

Ebel followed a winding path to the VUES classroom that has been her professional home for the past 21 years and now for just a few days more — she will step down at the end of the school year.

Halpern and her therapy dog give insight into aging

MIDDLEBURY — She’s been visiting Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) just about every Tuesday for more than three years, but the senior residents still line up for her arrival, hoping to get some eye contact and a handshake or two. No need for an exchange of words.

Not that the celebrity in question can speak in complete sentences; her vocabulary is confined to the occasional “woof.”
